I was just wondering if NYU Econ/math majors get internships on wall street. Are there econ & math majors that work on wall street? I would assume that the Stern school students are given first priority for internships on wall street, but can people with econ & math double majors land an internship or even a job there as well?
Thanks

Yes, plenty of econ majors from CAS go into I-banking and wall street jobs. Not as many as Sternies obviously, but there are quite a few. I have a family friend who is currently an analyst at Barclays Capital and he graduated as a CAS econ major back in 2005. A double major in econ and math will definitely get many companies and firms their attention, since many do either just econ or just math, but completing both majors with a high gpa will be difficult. Do-able, but difficult. Honestly, your GPA and networking is what really matters. Internships shouldn’t be that much of a problem because of NYU’s connections and alumni. I will be majoring in Econ as well, but probably minoring in either computer science or business studies, rather than double majoring. But if you’re up to the task of a lot of work and maintaining high grades, then go for it.

Some Stern kids will try to tell you differently to keep their egos up, but in my opinion, CAS Econ kids have the same opportunities as Stern kids. I’m a CAS Econ major (junior) myself, and I did an summer / fall internship with a brokerage house this past year, and I am interning with a hedge fund this upcoming spring.

The important thing is to network, network, network. The information sessions / career fairs are not just open to Stern kids, but to all NYU students, so take advantage of those.

i know this thread is mostly focused on internships/career paths, but would any of you be able to shed some light on transferring into the econ major at cas? i’m a freshmen at cu boulder and would love to transfer to nyu next year, but i wasn’t sure if i should even apply with my current gpa (3.51). our program is decent, but i’m also minoring in russian and french and our russian program is dreadful. i’ll be finished with every language course we offer after this year. do any of you know about transfer stats or applicant qualifications? any help would be wonderful : )
