My essay: How I spent a whole year saving up money through in a commercial city like Dubai to buy seven pianos for a school of 400 blind students in India.
I still aspire to keep doing more to fill in my EC’S. Do you think I can get in?
It’s a bit late to add ECs. Depth is important.
FYI the middle 50 ACT for NYU is 30-34 so that looks low.
I think NYU is a reach for you to be honest, especially as an international. What other colleges are you applying to?
I’m thinking of applying to UCLA, Bentley, UCB, Northeastern.
The only reason I wanted to go to NYU is because I wanted a university in the form of a city. I’m still taking my ACT’s, so maybe, hopefully, that will increase.
Do you know anyway I can improve?
You’ve got a good record and you’re giving yourself the best possible chance by going ED. Your scores are good but not great and your ECs look okay - the 3rd place national award is the kind of thing admissions will like. NYU loves to admit a widely diverse student body so being an international isn’t a drawback and may be a plus unless a ton of students apply from Dubai. If you can get your ACT up a point or two it’ll help! You might add BU, Drexel and Temple to your application list to broaden it a bit - those are also urban universities but slightly less competitive for admission.
UCLA and UCB will be reaches also. Those are two of the most competitive public colleges on the US (I think UCLA is actually number 1 on that list.) I’m assuming you are full pay? That will help for NYU (for the UCs you’d pretty much have to be full pay anyway as an international).
I’d suggest you browse the ED thread from this year to get an idea how your results stack up. I am not sure about IB, my recollection is a number of the IB candidates have a number of 7s, but I don’t know levels etc. If you can get your ACT up to about 32 I think that’d help. You may find with your stats and ED you are offered alternate entry into LS core rather than CAS.
@CaMom13 do universities double-check into everything we write? Yes, I’m trying to get my ACT up so much!! I dont know what else I can do. I love the way NYU is placed out all over the city. I want to get into a really good school. What else can I do right now?
@SJ2727 I hope they do so badly!!! Yes, I know that both are extremely high reaches, however, I really want to go to a good university versus a moderate one, especially because the universities in the US are so expensive.
@xkhushpx - don’t get too caught up in university rankings, US schools considered to be “moderate” can still have fantastic opportunities. I have a friend from Malaysia who came to the US for college and attended the University of Iowa - talk about culture shock. She now lives in San Francisco, works for a major software company and no one cares where she got her degree. Going to certain schools may give you a foot in the door for jobs but ultimately going to a school you can afford and working your hardest there is your best chance at success.
I’m a bit worried that you’re even asking this question. No they don’t, though some colleges will check on some things on some applications. Bear in mind that when you sign the application you are signing that everything in it is true, and a college can rescind your offer at any stage (including rescinding your admittance after you’ve started studying or even revoked your degree after you graduated) if they discover you falsified anything.
@SJ2727 No, I don’t plan on falsifying anything. It was just a general question, hahahaha. But yeah, I understand the disadvantages of falsifying information sure exceeds the advantages of it. Thank you though!
@CaMom13 Oh wow. That is most definitely incredible. Yeah, I have to decide some safety and target options as well!!
No one has said anything in over a week in this so I’m just checking up. How’s everyone doing? Especially with the application process?
In the midst of finals right now which will determine my gpa, as well as studying for the august SAT which will probably determine my acceptance.
So naturally I’m just peachy
