@J03421 Okay, thanks! (: I was beginning to think that I wrote too much but at least I’m not alone in this! Mine is exactly 1,462 words after I trimmed down some unnecessary stuff.

@HelloParis- do you mean words or characters? If you mean 1462 words, that’s a lot more than 1500 characters…

@magfri yayyyy another ct person! haha
well right now im freaking out because my first quarter grades SUCK. Is everyone sure NYU wont see them? My first quarter ends the first week of november.

@merrhh I’m applying to NYU Tisch Kanbar’s film program as well! So excited! :D

I’m sure a news video supplement is fine, considering that the Film Program concerns itself as much with Narrative as it does with Documentary. Not to mention that if it’s your best work, you should submit it regardless. The portfolio serves, as far as I can tell, to checkpoint for them how far along you are creatively.

Andrew Wonder, director of Undercity, just graduated form Tisch a couple of years ago and Undercity is a great Doc Short that got tons of news-show airtime.

My D applied to NYU ED last year, was accepted and is now a freshman. Our high school doesn’t send out first quarter grades automatically and NYU never asked for them, so D’s admission was based on her grades before junior year. In most cases, NYU does not ask for first quarter grades, so for the vast majority of applicants, there is no need to send them or to worry that they will be counted for ED admissions.

In January, D’s guidance counselor called to ask if her mid year grades were necessary since she was already admitted and they told him to not bother sending them since they didn’t matter. (D was concerned about her AP bio grade --67 at mid year–and so was hoping it did not need to be sent.) So despite what NYU’s poicy said, the only grades NYU rec’d senior year were D’s final grades–which reflected a slight lowering of her gpa, but she had pulled up AP bio to a mid 70’s grade (unweighted).

Good luck to everyone!

@uskoolfish thank you! I think my school tries to send them automatically so I will have to talk to my guidance counselor about this. I’m really hoping for the best here!!

I also really feel that NYU does look at applications wholistically.

There were real strengths in my D’s application: 2000 SAT/29 ACT which included a 35 ACT in English and a 720 SAT in reading, good art portfolio, did summer art program at NYU, had personal review/interview with member of art dept faculty before submitting portfolio–made changes according to his suggestions, very strong EC’s including good leadership, presented as a musical/ artistic kid, hispanic–but white and with high income, good recommendations and essays, 4 AP’s and 7 or so honor classes.

But there were also weaknesses: dropped math junior year after attempting pre-calc–took college algebra as a senior, 610 in math on SAT, 23 or ACT math, school doesn’t rank but gave out enough info to show that she would have ranked approximately top 30%ile, never took physics–took anatomy and physiology instead, weighted GPA was a 90.03–which would have been about a 3.7, however grades were inflated by high art and choir grades which may have been taken out if NYU recalculates.

So in the end, not only was she accepted, but she was placed in the Steinhardt scholars program! That came as a happy surprise.

Hey everyone, I’m a freshman here at NYU. If anyone has any questions on the application process or anything else, just PM me.

What are my chances!?

do i need sat subject scores or not because of the ACT!?

Hey Mathela!. I’m applying early to NYU’s film program and I’ve always wanted insight from a student. Also, what are you majoring in?

Does anyone want to critique each other’s essays? I really need someone to edit & look over mine and I’ll do for the same for you. If you’re interested, PM me and we can exchange emails! (:

My English teacher had advised me that it would be better to ask someone who doesn’t know you to look over your essays because the college readers also don’t know who you are upon you reading your essay. Friends/family will already know who you are and that will defeat the purpose of the essay a bit.

Hey guys! Along with mathela, I’m also a current freshman at NYU as a drama major- thinking about double majoring in psychology.
I know the whole auditioning process can be super stressful- and I did it ED1 as well, so if you have any questions, about the drama department, the application process, or just NYU in general feel free to PM me!

NYU CAS is my dream school. My GPA and test scores are low, but my EC’s and volunteer work and recommendations is the only thing I’ve got going for me. Anyone want to chance me?

Thank you to everyone who responds! I really appreciate it!

@EchoEchoEcho

Your ACT scores are a bit weak, and NYU does not superscore for the ACT. You probably need at least a 29 for the ACT scores. Your GPA is fine. 3.6 is the UW average, but I have a 91 average, yet a 3.5 GPA.

Your EC’s are great though; very above average.

If you have great essays, then you are set for NYU.

My opinion: take the ACT’s again, study very hard for them. If you can aim for a 29 or even a 28 not superscored, then that is fine. Then apply EDII for NYU CAS.

I wish you the best of luck.

[thread=1398678]BTW, try to chance me.[/thread]

@J03421

I’ve taken the ACT three times already, and I think it’s just test anxiety, I can’t seem to do well. I’ve studied really hard for them and no luck. But my school is kinda strange the way they convert GPA’s, I was surprised when she said I have a 3.6. I’m not sure what to do since those ACT’s are kinda like my final score. I hope it’s not the end all be all decision when they look at my application.

Unless policy has changed for this year, NYU does superscore for both the ACT and the SAT. I have asked the question to admissions twice–for D admitted class of 2012 and for D currently enrolled (class of 2016.)

Does anyone know how competitive the german major pool at cas is? (i would assume its not very competitive)

What are my chances?
Caucasian male

GPA: 3.6/4
ACT-29

I am a Peer Group Leader (Nationally recognized leadership program)
I am a Physical Education Leader (I lead gym classes of freshmen and sophomores)
I am a member of the Spanish Honor Society
I am a leader of the Pep Club
I am very involved in my Youth Ministry, and I am leading a 4 day Kairos retreat in a few weeks consisting of high school juniors and seniors.
I have tons of hours of volunteer work, from working at my church, to soup kitchens, to food pantries and so on.
I am a member of the varsity volleyball team and have been since my sophomore year, and I will be a captain this year.

So what do you all think?

@wvk0924

You didn’t tell me your college of choice, but they are a match for all schools except for Stern. Stern is a low reach for you. [thread=1398678]Do you mind if you can chance me?[/thread]

@J03421
I am looking to apply to the College of Arts and Sciences.

And I definitely think you have a good chance of getting in. The ACT score is right there, as well as the GPA. I would say you’ve got a great shot.
