I'm a junior, and I'm really interested in the music industry. I want to go to law school and eventually become an entertainment lawyer (with a specialization in music, if possible). Which one of these programs would prepare me for law school and the industry, Music Business or Entertainment, Media and Technology? Because I'm so passionate about music, it's difficult to write off the Music Business program, but I feel that because it's at Steinhardt (EMT is Stern), it could be less prestigious and have fewer industry connections. It's also a music degree, which I don't think is all that appropriate for someone going to law school (if anybody thinks otherwise though, let me know). If anyone is in either of these programs or knows anything about them I'd really appreciate some advice. Additionally, there aren't really any instructions on the EMT page about the application process (the Music Business major has like a whole supplementary app), so does anybody know if they have any applications process? And if they don't, how difficult is it to be accepted to this major?

Haha, you are pretty much in the same boat as me. Are you a junior at NYU? Steinhardt is a great program and will provide you with the resources and connections to break into the industry. That being said, they focus on putting you specifically into the music industry (labels, management, promotion, etc.) I personally think that the EMT program is a better program overall for entertainment in general. It will give you a well-rounded education that could be applied to any specialization, including but not limited to music. I’m not sure on the application process though. Also, it’s important to note that Music Business does not have a minor program. You either major in Music Business, or you can take some classes, but cannot minor. EMT on the other hand is only a minor. You have to be in, I believe, Stern, Tisch, or some other Steinhardt program in order to minor in EMT.

You can minor in EMT from CAS as well (I think).

@jazzcatastrophe Cool, I didn’t know that

I have literally the exact same plan. Applied to CAS, planning on majoring in economics and doing the EMT cross-school minor while following the pre-law “track”.

@NYUfan101 @aoeu123 Wow, I’m amazed by all of the people with interests similar to mine. That’s pretty cool. I’m actually a junior in high school, sorry I didn’t clear that up. I didn’t even realize that EMT isn’t a major at all. Oops. So I guess it would make sense to major in Music Business and minor in EMT, right? I’m still struggling a little bit with the practicality of Music Business because it is a music degree. I play a few instruments and I’m taking AP Music Theory right now, so it’s not like the music courses would be hard or unpleasant, but it seems weird to me that I’d have to take like aural comprehension courses as part of a “business” major. I kind of just wish it was based in Stern.

@giraffe18 Although Music Business is technically a Steinhardt program, you take many business courses in Stern, so you are getting a great business education in addition to music. The music part, however, is pretty minimal. They recognize that not everyone in the program wants to be a musician, but the majority of the ‘music’ courses are there just to make sure you aren’t tone deaf going into the music industry. Music Business major with EMT minor sounds like a great plan for you.

@NYUfan101 Thank you so much for your help. Hopefully that’s what I’ll be doing in two years!

I would double check that you can do both the Music Business major and the EMT minor since some of the requirements may be the same. I’m not saying you can’t, but I would check. D graduated with BM in Vocal Performance and minors in EMT and English lit.

@giraffe18 To clarify, EMT is only offered as a minor and is hosted by Stern but is cross-school.
