NYU Fall 2017 Transfers Official Thread

@thedescutnerd hi!! I’m applying to NYU tisch for film. What program were you in??

@acceptmepls123 I was in drama! The Stella Adler Studio to be specific :slight_smile: but both my roommates are in film and tv!

@thedescutnerd pitt is a really good school academically :slight_smile: personally i wasn’t a fan of pittsburgh as a whole which is why i’m transferring to a school in manhattan!! i would say if you already love the city of pittsburgh then you’ll love pitt.

@acceptmepls123 i applied march 17th so i’m right there with you lol i believe we’re supposed to start getting decisions in mid april. i think the whole “rolling” admissions for transfers suggests that they’ll be looking at our applications and sending out decisions immediately. i don’t think it has anything to do with when we applied! in previous years, people have applied in january and didn’t hear back til june while other people applied when we did and heard back end of april. i think it’s really just random honestly

Has everyone’s application requirements been checked off yet?

@lpkillz123 mine haven’t and i submitted my app on march 17th. all my supplementals were sent in before my application but only my standardized test scores have been checked off so far :confused: i emailed the office of admissions a couple hours ago to make sure they have all of my documents but they haven’t replied yet.

Internals don’t get checklists and I don’t like that cause I want to know where I’m at with them in any way hahaha

@annadragon I definitely love Pittsburgh since it’s my home >:D< I’m gonna start looking into majors there and probably point park and duquesne if I don’t get into gallatin. If I don’t get in I’m going to Disney for this fall and then probably headed home in the spring haha

@descutnerd What is the student-to-teacher ratio like? Does it vary from class to class, division to division? Also, can students from different divisions end up in the same class for a general core requirement such as, say, a freshman English course?

@lillyJ678564 It depends on the class you’re in really, but most of the classes are pretty small, maybe about 15-20 students per class? Of course those were the theatre studies classes mostly. You can definitely end up with tons of different people from across all schools, which I really like. There’s a class called Writing the Essay that every single freshman has to take, but there are different versions of it. For example, the Tisch WTE class focuses on writing and the arts, and my class had drama, photography, and film people in it. In the second semester of WTE you have to take a lecture in addition to your normal WTE class, and that’s the only lecture I’ve had.

If you’re in studio, classes are generally small since you’re with your groups all year. My studio classes ranged from 12-16 people depending on how the groups were separated that semester.

The biggest non-lecture classes I’ve had are my Stern classes (cause I’m in a Stern/Tisch minor that’s really popular so a lot of people take those classes). I think my Intro to Marketing class that I’m currently in has about 35 people in it…?

As for relationships with your teachers, I’ve had good relationships with a decent amount of my teachers. Even in the larger classes, I find the professors really try hard to and succeed in getting to know everyone in their classes as individuals. I stayed with my WTE teacher for the whole first year because he knew us all well individually and knew how to push us as individuals. As much as we all are glad WTE is done, that professor really made me a good writer. I feel for the most part, the teachers want to get to know all their students, so because of this, classes can feel smaller or more like group efforts rather than just giant lectures :slight_smile:

ah okay good! Do you have any idea how many transfers they take for film? @annadragon

@lillyJ678564

Did you mean the day before April 1st? I think they don’t take any application after 11:59 PM the 31st

No, the deadline was April 1st, 11:59 pm. If you look up the deadlines on their website – which for transfer applicants is April 1st – there is a marginal note stating that all applications are due 11:59 pm of the date of the deadline. So, I had until 11:59, April 1st to submit my app. @thecitystars

@thedescutnerd Thanks. Assuming I’m accepted, I’ll be majoring in biology and I’m wondering about the science lecture and labs class sizes. I’m pretty sure labs in all colleges limit the number of students per lab session. And I don’t want to end up in a class of 500 students for an organic chemistry lecture; I can’t even imagine getting an elaborative, satisfying answer from a professor teaching 500 students.

@thedescutnerd Hi! I was wondering if you have any advice or tips about the drama audition since you’re in it? And if you dont mind me asking why you want to transfer out? I’m applying to Drama as an external transfer so my audition is in less than a week and I’m super nervous!

@veelynne Hi! This is gonna be suuuuuuuper long, so brace yourself haha. My advice is honestly what everyone is gonna tell you, relax and really be yourself, but be the best version of yourself hahaha. Whenever you audition there’s a 10 minute interview too, which was my favorite part and honestly the reason why I think I got in haha. I auditioned for every studio including the musical theatre studio, so I did a singing and dancing portion along with my monologues. NYU’s audition was definitely my favorite one I did :slight_smile:

The interview is really great; they have a bunch of questions for you about why you wanna be there and stuff like your favorite book, but if you’re really engaged with your interviewer then they may just ask genuine questions that they think off based on what you tell them. My interviewer and I barely covered any of the questions he had written down because we just kept talking about something I brought up about my interests in backstage and onstage theatre.

As for why I’m leaving, it honestly has nothing to do with the quality of training or the social environment or any reason like that. I absolutely loved everything I learned from studio and wouldn’t give up the training for the world. However, I came to NYU because of the mix between conservatory training and a regular liberal arts sort of college experience. Once I got here though, I learned most of your gen eds are still theatre focused, not outside the drama department. I’m more of an eclectic person who wants a broader learning experience. I never imagined myself working as an auditioning actor every day after college. I never wanted just an actor lifestyle 100% like everyone else in studio did, and, as you know, you pretty much to be 150% focused on acting to be a successful actor, which I’m just not nor did I intend to be. I have too many interests outside of acting (even if some of them are still in theatre or in the arts). Almost every theatre teacher I’ve ever had, from high school to college, has told me that if I have ANY other interests other than theatre, then I should get the hell out of theatre. And I honestly think that’s true. Actors need to be only actors all the time. There are too many people in the field trying to get jobs who are that dedicated for a job to go to someone who isn’t totally dedicated to it.

Because of this desire for a more eclectic training to fit everything I’ve done my whole life, I’m trying to create a concentration in Gallatin on Entertainment, Marketing, and Management. Hopefully they like the idea as much as I do haha :slight_smile:

SO! I would absolutely recommend any of the studios at Tisch to anyone who wants to pursue acting in any way. I never thought I’d graduate with a drama degree, so it was really just a matter of when I would transfer once I figured out what I wanted to do. I loved my training, I loved my teachers, and the people I worked with are all fantastic actors. I really wanted the amount of training I got, and I just feel that that was as far as I wanted to go with theatre training at this time. But anyone who wants the best theatre training there is to offer, then NYU is DEFINITELY the place for you >:D<

@thedescutnerd

How’s the financial aid! Is it okay?

@thedescutnerd I’m a Gallatin external transfer and I really hope that we both get in! :slight_smile: Do you have any friends in Gallatin right now? How do they find the interdisciplinary program?

@thecitystars they give a lot of financial aid and scholarships honestly (even though they are hellbent on telling you they don’t). I think pretty much everyone I know has a scholarship but I don’t cause I missed the deadline by like… a day haha. So I’m paying full price %-(

@NYUhopeful_1198 I actually just found out I didn’t get in :confused: I hope you get in though! I have a couple friends in Gallatin currently but most of them were Gallatin freshmen, not transfers.

As far as I know they all love their concentrations in Gallatin, though I’m not totally sure what they are hahaha. I know one girl who transferred from my studio into Gallatin who I believe focuses on Broadway producing or something and she loves it.
