@hope2018transfer don’t worry about hurting NYU’s feelings. You already got accepted! They can’t un-accept you haha. Just call/email them and ask if they could give you an extension for the acceptance/payment. Tell them that it’s too soon, etc. Hopefully they understand!!
How many people applied to Steinhardt/Silver/SPS through the CCTOP?
@mishk90 As far as I know, NYU isnt a need blind school, so yeah they do.
@zachsambition I did apply and was admitted to Steinhardt through the CCTOP scholarship The financial aid packages of CCTOP recipients are actually not that bad if you are a commuter student. CCTOP recipients might graduate between $15k to $30k in student loans.
@Sergozoria That’s great. Let me know how it goes for you and how much they offer you. I applied through the CCTOP but I have not been receiving financial aid offers through other universities I applied to, I guess I don’t qualify. I’m expecting to receive no help paying for NYU other than about $10k in grants and $10k in scholarships which seems consistent between what I’m offered from other colleges. Unfortunately it’s not enough and it will be hard for me to justify student loans to attend.
I think I’m better off attending UWash, SBU, or Cornell (if accepted). The problem also becomes this for those of us waiting to hear back: the longer we go without hearing anything, the less likely we are to receive housing.
Basically I knew the CCTOP funding was determined through financial aid, I just didn’t realize I would be receiving close to nothing.
@shrukin1 this is gonna sound so stupid but what does need blind mean, and since NYU isnt one what does it mean? Lol i feel stupid
@mishk90 Need blind = doesn’t care if you need financial aid.
Not blind = Might prefer students that pay the full amount on their own.
@zachsambition Last Fall 2017, I applied and was admitted to NYU for Spring 2018, but I had to take the semester off and reapply again. When I received my NYU financial aid package last semester, I received nothing, but my CCTOP scholarship, my federal and state grants (FAFSA and TAP). If I had decided to attend NYU this Spring 2018, I would’ve graduated with $20k in student loans as a commuter student, but this was just an estimate. NYU has a bad reputation with giving aid to transfer students. They mostly reserve their fundings for incoming freshmxn students. Hopefully this time around won’t be the same.
I would actually choose SBU or Cornell over NYU. SBU is a great institution and a lot cheaper, and Cornell offers a better education and financial packages than NYU. I actually applied to Cornell for Fall 2018. It was brought to my attention that transfer students will receive their admission decisions from Cornell by April 17th.
I completely agree. Accepted students on the first wave usually receive better funding than those students accepted on the second or third wave.
By the way, are you a NY resident? If this is the case, then CCTOP should not be an issue for you, but it also depends on how comfortable you are with your financial aid package because some students are okay with graduating with nothing more than $30k in student loans.
I got into Gallatin for Fall 2018!

I’m trying to decide if I should transfer because as much as I really dislike the location/culture of my current school and REALLY want to move to nyc, I would be giving up a huge scholarship and a great academic program. I have a ton of academic freedom because the honor program exempts me from any core classes/ gen eds, so I literally only take classes that are for my majors/minors/electives. I love all my courses and professors, but I’m miserable in terms of a social life. I hate living on a campus and I hate the party atmosphere of my school, and everyone is so shallow and uninterested in the arts of anything intellectual. I stuck it out for almost a year now and it hasn’t gotten better.
Going to NYU would financially strain my family, though my parents would still be able to pay for it (they just won’t be able to help me out for grad school, and if I stay at my current school they will be able to). Also, if I don’t get into student housing, I might have to commute 2 hours from home every day. Plus, isn’t it better to graduate with 3 majors and 2 minors than a concentration? I’m SO conflicted, I’ve literally been trying to make this decision for MONTHS now… do I give up a great academic program and financial security just for the immediate satisfaction of living in the city and meeting like-minded people? Or I do I stick it out for a few more years and graduate with 3 majors and then move to NY for grad school?
Congrats! When did you find out?
@danielleag Congratulations on your acceptance to NYU! Looking at this from a low income student perspective, I truly believe it would be best for you to stay at your current institution if finances are an issue or just transfer to another institution that gives good financial aid like Ithaca College, Boston University, Cornell University or Amherst College.
I think it is a smart move to take advantage of the scholarship you are receiving now and the program that you are currently in. Is social life and drowning in student loans more important than your academics? If students really cared about their education, this should not be an issue.
Lack of social life and culture should not be the main reason why students want to transfer out of their current institution. I believe students should be investing all their fundings and money for graduate school, not their undergraduate. I would recommend saving your parents the trouble of having to deal with huge amount of debt.
It is a privilege to have someone to pay for your education out of pocket, and I wish low income students like myself had such privileges. As a low income student, I have huge appreciation for the academic, financial and professional opportunities that I have received throughout my education. Do not take that for granted!!!
@danielleag You should look into the salary difference between the two schools. If NYU costs $10,000 more each year, but has the same salary, then it’s a pretty big “waste”, or lets call it “investment” of money.
@danielleag I understand where you are coming from in regards to social and cultural life at university. I agree education is a high priority but your wellbeing is and always will be the top priority. The decision is up to you but I just thought you deserved to hear that either way is a worthy decision and that not liking your university atmosphere is enough justification to transfer schools. I think everyone can agree that going to school at NYU and in NYC would be extraordinary
@danielleag all of your majors would require you to pursue graduate school for a decent job and I wouldn’t put myself into debt just for a better social life for three years. You can always apply to NYU for grad school and save your money now so you’ll be able to afford it!
Found out on the 5th!
@danielleag when did you apply? congrats !!
As Vincent said, “need blind” means the school doesn’t consider your ability to pay when considering your admission. However, applicants should ignore this need-blind/need-aware issue if they can afford the school (especially if the school meets full need of applicants). Most schools are need blind but don’t meet full need.
Okay thanks that makes me understand better and helps for sureeee
Did anybody apply to Tandon?
is there a GroupMe for transfers waiting on NYU decision?
