Your future career, your future life, your future with a significant other and maybe children SHOULD be your dream.
Four years of college is not “the dream”. The remaining debt will be a nightmare.

I once wrote in the parents forum that I wish I understood the siren song of NYU. Hands down, it’s the school on cc that seems to inspire people to make really poor financial decisions. I know of one girl who took out so many loans for her freshman year and then didn’t go back. Then she went back later for another semester and dropped out again. Meanwhile, sooooo many loans and no degree. I almost wished I toured the school so I could at least understand the allure.
In OP’s defense I do know of a loan that has zero interest but that must be paid back in 10 years. It’s for kids of profs at a certain private uni that isn’t NYU. So it’s not impossible.
OP, please listen to everyone on here that is saying that your can’t afford this school.

In many cases, many of these kids have never seen the school!
In many cases, I think it’s just the allure of being in NYC.
Yes, these kids who come here to this forum every year and must go to NYU at any cost, cost to family, stress to family, cost to future ability to continue school or buy a car or get out from under crushing debt–it is the parents fault for not knowing how to say no to precious pumpkin, in the best interests of the kid, I suppose. After all, the kid can’t make these poor decisions without the parent okay.
It is more heartbreaking the kids who have to drop out and can’t afford to finish somewhere else.
NYU financial aid is an oxymoron.
NYU has little motivation to provide decent FA. It has enough naive students and their willing parents to borrow and pay regardless.
This is the saddest story I’ve read in a very long time. It’s like watching an oblivious person get run over by a train. I can only hope other students read these comments and don’t make the same mistakes.
(Rising high school seniors, PLEASE read these comments and don’t make the same mistakes.)
Hence the key words that make up the acronym IFII (post #49):
Irrational Financial Immolation index
"NYU financial aid is an oxymoron. "
that says it all…
someone should tweet that out to the world…
maybe it will prevent the same thing from happening again ext year.
maybe…
I think everything that can be said has been said by now. Closing thread
