NYU Free time/Gym

I’m attending NYU this fall at the school of engineering. Anyone know how much free time I will have as an engineering student? I signed up for classes and I don’t have classes on Friday and the weekend. What do people do for free time. I understand that NYU is very different from a typical university, so I’m just curious. In addition, does NYU have a gym or gyms?

There is a gym, Palladium Gym, but it isn’t located very close to the Brooklyn campus. From what I understand, it is near Washington Square. I’m not sure if the Engineering school has a dedicated gym for its students.

NYU has 4 gyms in NYC. Most gyms are generally open 7am-10pm although the hours might vary depending on location and day with non-school days closing a little bit earlier. Having enough time to go to the gym is more about your personal time management than your major. I used to go ~4 times a week after classes or late at night before grocery shopping. It can get really busy around 5-7 when most classes end so I would avoid those times if you don’t want to wait for any equipment.

  • Palladium is located at 14th St, between 3rd and 4th Ave in Manhattan.
  • 404 Fitness is located at Lafayette St and 4th Street right by campus. It's a recently converted Crunch Fitness facility since Coles is under construction
  • Coles on Mercer and Bleecker is under construction.
  • Jacobs is the athletic facility on the Brooklyn Campus.

And don’t forget that working out in NYC is pretty simple.

  • You're going to be walking more than you've ever walked before, probably. Just getting to the subway and back, for example, will be like a 1/4-1/2 mile each way. On average NYers walk 4-5 miles per day before a work out;
  • There's Citibike everywhere (bike sharing);
  • Bike routes run around the island of Manhattan and throughout the other boroughs, over the bridges. Google for route maps for those that are fully protected from traffic;
  • City parks offer running routes often with spectacular views, along the water, throughout Central Park, over bridges into other boroughs, over the GW to the Palisades;
  • City park department offers free swimming pools, nearly free tennis (96th street tennis has clay courts) and golf, free kayaking opportunities, etc. Look for those events listed and updated daily online by googling NYC park events;
  • Surfing and ocean sports out by the Rockaways and other beaches;
  • The NYU area has one of the more famous pick-up basketball courts in the city. If you can't get on the court, at least enjoy watching it!
