How are you paying for NYU?

Through the SallieMaes tuition plan.

@tokidoki530

All the professors vary. In general, the bigger the class, the more self-studying you’ll have to do. Tutoring is often by appointment or during their office hours. The number of people in a class varies. Lectures have hundreds.

The Hayden low cost rooms blow compared to other low cost rooms. They’re dark and really cramped. There may not be bunk beds unlike other dorms.

Poli sci is popular here. Good professors. But is it worth the money? Probably not since you’ll get stuck with an average job after graduation.

NYU has great study abroad programs. Often, other schools use NYU’s facilities abroad.

Pre-med lectures are enormous. Around 750 kids. I don’t know how anyone learns anything in there, especially since it’s at 8 AM. With several hundred kids in the class, no professor gives a damn who goes in and out. They just show up, lecture, and split.

Parents pays for it. Tbh, the more I think about it, especially if you’re not in Stern, in this economy I wouldn’t take out big loans to come here. Yea you get the city and all, but it’s not like the NYU reputation and education itself are going to bail you out. To answer your question, look for any scholarships you can get and apply to everything. Aside from that you’re stuck on the government and NYU’s assessment of how much financial aid you deserve, which probably isn’t the right amount. Whether NYU is worth it is a big dilemma.

As long as you’re in NYU and have an NYU ID, I think you can get into the giant science lectures no problem. Organic Chemistry is much smaller than the 700+ General Chemistry courses, my orgo chem class roster looks to be about 260 for this coming fall semester.

If I change to a cheaper meal plan after I pay my tuition and all other fees according to my original bill, will I get refund? Thank you!

Where do I go to choose or check my meal plan?

ElayneMe,
You will always get a refund, if you over pay anything.

Okay! Thanks…what about International Relations? And admission process scares me ): im entering as a junior this fall at my highschool, and im doing the IB program. My grades, gpa and rank werent so hot fresh/soph year but im still determined. I had personal issues so yeah

You will get a meal plan refund. You have a few weeks into the semester to decide what meal plan you want. I started 225 flex, and switch to 14/wk and got my money back. If you wanna be sly, start with a large flex plan, abuse it in the first week, and then switch to a smaller one that suits you.

Where does the refunded money go? Your campus cash account or the bursar one?

Not campus cash, it just goes straight back to you (which I guess is the bursar account).

Hey I’m going to be a freshman at nyu this fall and I have a quick question about ap scores. I recently sent my ap scores to nyu from senior year (5 on spanish but 1 on ap calculus ab/art history/gov and politics) I only wanted to get credit for spanish, but it would have costed $10 to waive each of the other scores so I just sent them all. do you know if my 1 on calculus will affect my placement into a math class or will it be determined by my score on the placement exam at the start of school? And will my 1 on art history and gov have any negative effect on my academics next year or will those scores be disregarded?

The only way bad scores will hurt you is if you’re trying to apply. If you’re already in, it doesn’t matter at all, you just won’t get credit for them. Your placement exam scores will completely override any AP scores.

Hi again! Thanks for being so helpful with my questions in the past.

I’m starting to order the books I need for my MAP course–a TON–and I was wondering whether I have to get the exact edition listed. Like, there’s this book by Shakespeare on the list, and I was wondering if I could just get a different version. Does it matter? Also, what if I get the ebook version instead? Are these books for in-class use, or out of class? Are we even allowed to use ereaders in class?

Lizbette- How did you find out which books you needed?

Go to the NYU bookstore and there’s a link that shows you what books you need.

@ElayneMe

You get a refund. I think it goes back into your Bursar account, but not completely sure.

IR has an honors program, which is very competitive. Only allow a certain number of ppl per year.

@sarasharif87

No AP score negatively affects placement results. The placement exams only matter.

@lizbette

From my MAP experience, the version doesn’t matter. It may only differ in that the pages could be labeled differently. So your professor or TA might cite a page that isn’t the same in your book. E-books are ok, as well. Really depends on your professor though. Some may be these old guys who have never used an electronic device in their lifetimes, so they may not recommend it. As long as you’re ok not having a hard copy, it’s fine.

What NYUSternie said.

How do you suggest buying textbooks? Did you buy yours from the bookstore or online, new or used? Also, when did you buy them? Would it be better to get them now or wait until classes start to make sure I don’t buy useless books?

i’m gonna be a senior this year and i’m freaking out over NYU accepting me or not. i currently have a 3.65 GPA weighted and i’m almost breaking a 2000 on the SAT’s (i’m going to take them again in october to achieve a 2000 or higher). i’m the vice president of my grade and i’ve been involved in 5 clubs consistently throughout my high school career. i do sports on the side and i’ve been volunteering at four organizations since 8th grade. i also have a letter of recommendation from the principal, an advisor, a guidance counselor, and soon one from my AP teacher. i wanna apply early decision to the college of arts and sciences. assumed that i’d break 2000 on the SAT’s, do you think i’ll get in?! i keep looking at the statistics but i wanna hear about my chances from someone that actually goes to NYU. thanks!

The NYU bookstore should be your last resort for books…extremely overpriced. Search eBay and Amazon for used books at much lower prices. Also there are many Facebook groups of NYU students (like me) trying to sell books for classes they just finished;
