Ok, so as the title makes it very clear- which are the best dorm options for Freshman?
dorms in which it's easy to make friends, but doesn't get too overbearing (like loud music at odd hours on weeknights)
any help would be appreciated!

Hey, well I think you’re able to make friends anywhere, it’s just up to you to put yourself out there and be social. But from what I hear, Hayden seems to be the ‘most social’ dorm. It’s known for parties and stuff though, so I don’t know if that’s a turn off for you. Goddard is a residential college dorm so it’s a close-knit community…you’re bound to make friends there. Founders and 3N seem to be a really popular choice this year (I personally put them both as my #1 and #2) but its a 10-15 minute walk to campus so you might want to think about whether you’d be willing to trek it during the winter, especially after this year’s crazy snow storms up there. Weinstein is right on campus so locations great but a lot of people complain about it being like a jail. However, I’ve heard from previous freshmen that although the rooms are small, almost everything is around there so you definitely meet new people and make friends. Honestly the only dorms I haven’t heard to much about have been Brittany and Rubin. Oh and theres also Exploration floors in many of the dorms so if you sign up for one, thats also a pretty much guarantee that you’ll make friends easily. Hope this helps :)

I feel the best dorms for freshman are the ones near Washington Square. They are very close to classroom buildings, library and very close to Macdougal St and Bleeker St where it is the heart of Greenwich Village. Hayden is right on Macdougal. If you are not yet savvy about getting around the city and the subways, staying near campus may be helpful. Rubin is a great dorm, 2 blocks from WS and right on 5th Ave. Fantastic location, great neighborhood. The freshman dorms further away from campus are great also, but it comes down to location and amenities like having a kitchen. The dorms around WS do not have kitchens but for some It isn’t that important because all freshman have to have the meal plan. In sophomore year, you will be relegated to going further away from campus, so why not stay around WS for your first year. It is some of the best real estate in city. You are closer to the action and there is a certain vibrancy in that area especially at night. It’s hard to describe. You have to see and feel it for yourself to understand what I am saying.

Only an American would base his or her accomodation decision on a 15 minute walk.

I honestly can’t see the problem in spending half an hour each day walking through the city… sounds quite pleasent to me, actually.

^ I’m not American, but I find the 3-minute walk between my (boarding school) dorm and dining hall annoying. Just throwing that out there.

Are all the good dorms already taken by the ED people? I haven’t paid the deposit at NYU yet.

Nah, everybody’s put in a lottery system. There’s no type of priority for housing anymore.

thanks guys! that was helpful.

I kinda agree with staying closer to WS cause sophomores get dorms further away anyway. I probably will put Goddard as my first choice followed by 3N or Founders. What about the dining facilities? Which of these have their own dining hall, with vegetarian options? That’s really important to me.

While NYU boasts it’s initiatives for being green and local, Hayden Hall caters to vegan dining offering daily options. They are also using locally grown and animal sensitive practices such as cage free eggs, safe fish farming, etc.

My D is vegetarian and there are TONs of vegetarian/vegan eateries around campus, especially on Macdougal and Bleeker St.
