NYU - GSP to Tisch

Hi, I am an international student from Mumbai, India. I had applied to the NYU CAS in January this year for primarily two reasons - It was a dream college and my counsellor recommended it as the least competitive college at NYU. I was in my gap year when I applied and still not in a clear state of mind. Since then a lot of developments have taken place and I am sure I want to Major in acting and minor in cinematography or direction perhaps.

Now as I stand I have been accepted at NYU for the General Studies Program (GSP). I am still awaiting my USC response. In my gap year even since i applied I have won a competitive reality television show winning 1 million rupees. I have also acted in the worlds first live film which was a promotional 20 minute film on channel V for the launch of virgin Mobile and am publishing my poetry with visual art independently. In short my portfolio in my opinion looks very strong.

My question is, would it be wise for me to go to a place like USC (still awaiting response) and study acting there and apply for a transfer to tisch next year or not apply at all (how do the acting schools compare?) or should i go for the NYU GSP for the first year and apply for a transfer to Tisch in my second year?

The third alternative is to go to one of my safetys (Chapman, Syracuse, Emerson) all of which I have received offers from and aply for a transfer next year.

Essentially I do not want to ed up in a position next year where I am stuck with something I don't wish to continue and no choices. I do not mind the GSP for a year as itll provide me a European experience that I will relish and I'll be study a general curriculum that'll offer me some general exposure I can always use. I do not want to be stuck in the GSP for more than a year though. At the same time from my understanding USC has a better cinema school but NYU a better acting school (correct me if i am wrong please) so USC would be a better worst case scenario. But is the GSP a better choice than my safeties because I am not guaranteed enrollment at Tisch only CAS in my third year.

I would really appreciate some experienced advice. Thanks.

First, you can't minor in film and television.

but you could major in acting and minor in producing.

I don't know if you can go GSP-> Acting. Call GSP.

but you can go GSP-> Tisch Writing, Film & TV.

It's hard though. You go through the whole portfolio process and for film you have to take summer class upon acceptance.

Acting you have to audition. USC and NYU have different approaches to film (one as a business, the other as an art).

Good luck!

You can't go from GSP-> Tisch because the school you originally applied to is CAS. If you go applied to NYU CAS and got into NYU GSP, then only school you can get in after two years of GSP (required) is to go to CAS.

A lot of GSP kids here are not well respected because GSP is often viewed as the "community college" of NYU.

So good luck with your USC decision. I don't know much about their film major but it seems like USC is a better choice if you get in.

xflash - That's not true - you can get GSP into Tisch and only have to do GSP one year, but you have to go to summer school the summer prior to your Sophomore year. My D was GSP'd to Tisch Film Production and the info said one year in GSP and then straight to her major.

I have spoken to GSP at NYU and they said that I can transfer from GSP to Tisch after my first year. Although the GSP is for two years. I am oly guaranteed enrollment at CAS, that does not mean I am compelled to go there or I cannot apply to another college but that application wil be entirely competitve with no guarantee. Id be more than glad to do summer school at Tisch before my second year. But is it possible to go from GSP to Major in acting and minor in producing? Again, is USC a better choice?

and elvenqueen10, how would you compare NYU and USC acting schools?
