NYU Housing Questions and Discussion (2022)

Hey, everyone. I guess I’m starting this both because I have questions, and because it may be useful for anyone else who does too.

I’ll be attending NYU from fall 2018, and I’m honestly lost when it comes to housing. I didn’t learn much from looking on the NYU site, so I was hoping I could get some help from here. I have a couple of questions:

  1. So NYU doesn't let you select your roommates. On what basis does NYU assign your Residential Hall, who you room with, and what kind of room you get (single, four-person suite...)?
  2. The deadline for the housing application is May 1. But does NYU housing work on a first come first serve basis? As in, will people who sent in their housing applications earlier be more likely to get their preferred living arrangement?

Thanks in advance!

Also, I’ll be attending Tandon. Does that mean I can only live in the Brooklyn halls, or could I live within the main campus and commute?

Hey! I’m a current junior at NYU. I think as a freshman NYU will probably want you to live in a Brooklyn residence hall, but I’m not in Tandon so I could be wrong about that. NYU tries to assign based on your listed preferences in the housing application and it is not first come first served. That said, I wouldn’t put off doing it until the last minute just to avoid any technological challenges with everyone submitting their applications at once. Once you are an upperclassman you will be assigned a time to pick, at which point it will be in your best interest to choose as quickly as possible.
Have you taken a look at the residence hall floorpans yet? They might help you get a sense of the size of the halls and what the rooms are like: https://www.nyu.edu/students/student-information-and-resources/housing-and-dining/on-campus-living/residence-halls/floor-plans.html

I hope this helps!

Does anybody here apply to NYU without housing

(Housing) You will list your top 3 housing preferences
Select low cost housing if cost is a concern otherwise leave it unchecked.
Low cost housing will probably get you 3-4 to a room
The earlier you send in your housing deposit the better.
It’s your preference of where you want to live. If you want to live in the city instead of Brooklyn that will probably be fine.

(Roommate) There is a questionnaire that needs to be answered regarding yourself and likes and dislikes.

I’m currently a Freshman at NYU. I think you would have to live in Brooklyn freshman year, but I know that every year after that you can live in any dorm you like. I would get the housing application done as soon as possible. Unfortunately, freshman year NYU doesn’t let you choose a roommate, but as an upperclassmen you can choose roommates or do random housing again. No freshman get singles. Every NYU dorm is different. For example, every dorm in my building is a double in a suite, so there are 4 of us in total. Some people have triples. Some people have studios and some have suites. It honestly depends on the dorm, and even then it’s unpredictable.

@simisolai what about sophomores ? My son was admitted and will spend his freshman year in London. NYUNY will not be an issue until sophomore year. Can he live near Washington Sq as a sophomore ?

Yeah! As an upperclassmen you can live in any dorm you choose, so he can live at the washington square campus or Brooklyn if he chooses to do so.
