I will join NYU 2021 at steinhardt for music conposition major and weinstein hall will be my first choice bc it has music practice room. If I want a private room, what should I do? Is it hard to get it? I saw the cost and im willing to pay for it. Do they just assign us randomly? Do many people try to go for private room? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey! So first of all, Weinstein isn’t the only dorm with a music practice room–I know where I like (Brittany) there’s one, and I think there’s some other places as well. There’s also music practice rooms around campus, in the Steinhardt building (I’m pretty sure) and in the Kimmel Center. For the private room thing: There’s no specific way to request a certain type of room, unless you’re asking for efficiency housing (which is cheaper housing and three people shoved into the same space as a double). So there’s no way to “go for” or ask specifically for a private room, sorry 
I guess your best chance would be to look at which buildings have the most private rooms available and hope for the best? For example, in Weinstein only 4% of the rooms are private (so not very many) but in Lipton it’s 11%, which is the highest.
Also yes, Freshman year you have no set control over rooms and roommates–it’s pretty random. The only thing they take into consideration are the preferences of where you want to live.
