Hey guys! I am so confused, I got an admission to NYU today...I think. Here's a part of it

"We have just completed our review of your application to New York University and though we are very much looking forward to offering you admission and having you here at NYU, we are unable to offer you direct admission to the College of Arts and Science. I am, however, eager to share with you that we can offer you admission to NYU's Liberal Studies Program, with a freshman year space reserved for you at our global academic center in Paris. Congratulations on your selection and we hope you take advantage of this unique international opportunity.

Each year, as we review applications for admission, we select especially promising students who we feel can both benefit from and contribute to NYU by entering the University as freshmen in our Liberal Studies Program. Students in our Liberal Studies Program complete the first half of their Bachelor of Arts degree in an interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum. This intellectually rigorous curriculum covers the development of civilization from ancient times through the present. Instruction in our Liberal Studies Program is through small, seminar-style classes fewer than 25 students taught by full-time faculty, creating an intimate college atmosphere within the larger NYU community.

Liberal Studies students who are in good academic standing (defined at the collegiate level as a cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher), at the end of the sophomore year, are guaranteed admission to the College of Arts and Science, where they then complete their junior and senior years. I would encourage you to read our viewbook that describes the Liberal Studies Program in detail, as well as a Frequently Asked Questions brochure. "

Does this mean I was too stupid to get into the college of arts and sciences? I've already gotten into several schools such as McGill, University of St Andrews, Aberystwth University, University of Edinburgh, and University of Exeter (I am American I applied to several school abroad). I wanted to study International Relations and Russian...also I applied to schools much harder to get into than NYU. I thought I had okay scores, 2150 cumulative SAT, 30 ACT, great recs, pretty solid essay. Should I be disappointed?

Yeah, I’m really confused. I don’t know if they stuck me in Paris because I talked about a French program I did in one of my essays…? I probably won’t end up going because I wanted to double major.

Sorry to keep posting, but I also wonder if they put me in LSP because on my additional information part of the common app I described some neurological issues I had and how they affected my concentration, memory, etc. Maybe I didn’t make it clear enough that they were resolved?

Gah, I’m just really paranoid about my other schools now.

i got it as well, also not sure how to feel about this. Like is this kind of like gallitan where we choose classes or do we have a set list of classes??? I also got the option about going to london paris shanghai or NY. Its still exciting though!!!

You get mostly set classes for the first two years (you get fewer electives then other schools), but also smaller class sizes. I don’t know about the abroad programs though.

obviously you weren’t ‘too stupid’ at all if they offered you admission. I know it’s not the school that you applied to, but it is nyu anyway. and your SAT scores are higher than mine which makes me nervous because I applied to CAS! Don’t feel bad about it, it shows that they want you! would you feel better if you just got rejected? this shows that they want you to go there, but for some reason they think you’d benefit from being in the LSP for a couple years. weigh your options and choose what’s right. every school is different so just because nyu didn’t give you your 1st choice doesn’t mean other schools won’t. good luck!

NYU used to have an admissions forum/bulletin board where prospective students could post questions and Admissions staff would answer them. I saved this response regarding LSP from 2009 and have previously posted it.

“We select about 10% of the applicants to New York University for this program. We select students for Liberal Studies that have not been offered admission to their first choice school (predominantly due to our highly selective admissions process), but whom we believe to be excellent matches for NYU. They are typically liberal arts-minded, academically competitive, and independent thinkers.”

As I’ve posted numerous times in the NYU forum, my daughter has “graduated” from LSP and is a happy and successful CAS student. If NYU is your first choice school, go for it!

I got into the Liberal Arts Program too, and at first I was a little disappointed. But the more I read about it, the better it seems. It really seems like they accept liberal arts-minded students into this program because its so reading and writing intensive. I’m really excited, I think I might go there in the fall, to the New York campus. I bet once it sinks in and you do more reading about the program, you’ll be excited too!

Wow. I didn’t even know they had a campus in Paris.

I’m sorry… this doesn’t have to do with what you’re talking about on this thread, but when did you receive this notice? I thought admission decisions would go out on April 1st. Now I’m worried. = / Are they giving out notice to admitted students first?

Regular decision is by April first. People placed into LSP have found out and are continuing to find out through April. Then students who get their main scholarships find out, and then the rest find out. March 30th, 31st, April 1st is when rejections should be notified.

Say i applied for psychology major with minor in business studies. What will i be doing my first two years in the lsp program to work toward my major and minor??? Like how many elective can we choose from?

Has anyone got a big beautiful purple package from NYU yet? i did the online thing and chose washington square campus, just wondering though if we should be getting them soon or when everyone else gets packets?

would love to know, obviously the 1st is more important. Also where else did everyone apply, is anyone definitely going? im still waiting for SC but im kind of prepared for the worst. I still have one of the best schools in the country to fall back on!!!

Hey again guys, to answer some of your questions, I found out on March 3 and I got the package (no purple envelope, a white one) today.

Honestly I’m not going to be very good at answering LSP questions because I’m definitely not going. At this point I have much better offers from McGill and University of St. Andrews and I’m waiting to hear on some others. I wish everyone else luck though, and if you do chose to go to NYU I hope you have the best possible experience!
