I'm a trumpet player applying to NYU's Music Tech program and I just had some Q's for any music tech majors, music majors, students in Steinhardt, or anyone who goes to NYU really...

I guess I was just wandering how the music program is at NYU in general and how many oppurtunities there are to get involved? any insight on this is greatly appreciated!

Also, even though I want to be a music tech major (I want to leave college with some sort of technical degree and I have a great interest and experience in technology) I still want to be playing trumpet (jazz, classical, you name it) as much as possible! So will I still be able to get lessons at the music school and be classically trained as well? I just don't want to give up one thing for the other.

Again, any insight greatly appreciated...

PDT, did you already apply or are you planning to apply next year?
My son is a trumpet player who had similar aims but with more emphasis on tech, recording and electronic composition specifically (and less emphasis on straight trumpet performance but performance on multiple instruments.) If you’re looking for an additional option to consider, I’ll tell you what he’s doing.

He now attends the University of Michigan School of Music Theater and Dance in their Performing Arts Technology degree.
There are four streams of the PAT degree – A, BMUS = Performance + technology (so you could do the jazz studio, for example); B = Multimedia Music + Sound (and composition) as a BFA; C = Multimedia/Visual + music/sound; D = B. Sc (Engineering) - recording and acoustical. In each case, they take about 4 students a year, selected by portfolio first, then audition and interview. If you’re interested in the specifications (very specific requirements) visit the [UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance](http://music.umich.edu) site and look for the PAT requirements.
He’s very happy in his case with the program, and is really enjoying the expansive curriculum (eg. composition, film scoring, music business, sequencing/recording etc.)

We looked at NYU during our process but specifically at Tisch’s Clive Davis department of recording arts. In your case, I feel it lacks the classical training and has an emphasis more “popular” (which is why my son didn’t proceed with it) and thus feel the Steinhardt Tech is a better fit. We found NYU a little cost-prohibitive and not especially generous with financial aid. If this is a consideration for you as well, make sure you apply to lots of additional options. Both Depaul and NYU have hefty, private tuition.

Best wishes!

Already applied. The program at UoM certainly sounds interesting.

I guess what I’m concerned of at NYU is that I will get there and just be a tech major with not alot of oppurtunities to improve myself as a trumpet player. Even though professionally I do desire that music tech career I am a pretty good trumpet player and have gotten into a couple good colleges for performances so I don’t want to just be forced to give it up.

PD, my son does struggle with that as a function of how busy he is with his various tech/production/composition projects, not as a function of the program itself or any lack of instruction (but there’s just not five hours left in the day to practice an instrument). But I’m sure Steinhardt will accommodate that, and that you can supplement with additional lessons or small ensembles as well. In a perfect world, the question to ask NYU would be if you are able to double-major or dual degree with performance and tech over 5 yrs. I don’t know their curriculum so they may already have addressed this in the curricular structure as well. Long and short of it is that you will not be “forced” to give it up so long as you are committed to co-developing your various skills and being creative about finding the time to balance your dual interests.
