Everyone graduates from college with severe debt. It's just a question of how much :-/

Yeah, I think I'm going to consider my third options more. xD My safety school offered me free tuiton and since I live so close by, I won't need to get a dorm.

but you'll trade away the college experience!

I know. I don't want to go there and I was excited about going somewhere cool and new, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much debt I'd end up in. I don't think it'd be fair to my parents to make them pay so much when there's a cheaper alternative. It's not so bad. ^_^'' Just kind of makes you cry to know you have to give up on your dreams sometimes.

I would kill to go to NYU or BU...can you give it to me if you don't want it? =/

Honestly DON'T give it up unless it puts you in financial debt so serious you can't live. We will ALL have debt, except for trust fund babies.

Well, I'm trying to get a few scholarships. And I think my dad is willing to give me the 8k a year, but it'd mean taking out loans. I just have to think some more. I thought you were accepted to both?

Nope, neither. Good luck! I hope you get those!

Oh? Then were did you get in? I thought for sure you got into those two...

Nickel. I read a few weeks ago you wanted to go to USC. What happened? I haven't been on CC in awhile. My D did not get into NYU, her first choice. Seems most kids from her school didn't get in and no one knows why. Anyway, she got into a lot of good schools but narrowed it down to BU and Cal. Any suggestions?

I didn't get into USC. =/ It was disappointing. >_< I don't know anything about Cal. xD Didn't apply to any schools in Cali except for USC and Stanford. Didn't get into either.

$8k/year is an OK debt load, not entirely comfortable but fully manageable (assuming that you have no other debt serious debt other than a moderate car payment). $32k at 6-8% interest rate is around $250/month for 15 years.

$20k/year should be immediately put into the "unimaginable" category, especially if you intend to major in Classics, a field that is on the low end of the payscale. I would say forget about NYU, no matter how "cool" it seems. No school in the world is worth that kind of debt.

The known unknown in the equation is grad school. If you know you will not be expected to cough up serious cash for grad school, and your heart is really with BU, go there (assuming that your parents will cover the $13k difference between what BU gives you and the cost of attendance). If you strongly believe you will go to grad school, and will study in a field where teaching or research assistanships are rare, go to your local school, save your and your parent's money for grad school.

Aww thanks Nick. I thought so too but I guess the competition for film and communication was too intense this year. I'm waitlisted at Pitt but I got in for spring and I feel like I'll get in. :) I'm waiting on LMU and a Virginia Commonwealth.

I'm proud you got into NYU and BU! You should so go if you can!

@GroovyGeek: I'm actually going to double major. I just haven't picked what my other major is. I know Classics isn't going to get me money, but I'd like to study something I like. ^_^ I already forgot about NYU the moment they showed me my aid package. xD I'm not sure what I'll study in grad school. Maybe English or something like that.

@americanbeauty23: I'm sorry you didn't get in! I thought for sure you would. =/ Good luck with those other schools, though.

nickel xenon
i'm with groovygeek. you should get the college experience that you desire. its the only chance you have at it. BU is giving you an opportunity to attend there with that much grant money. 8/k yr is manageable. think of what you will be getting in return. By the end it will be like a car payment. except cars depreciate, education appreciates in value as time goes by. If you are majoring in classics, think of Boston and all the social and cultural opportunities that will be avialable to you. IMHO BU is the best option.

Thanks for the replies guys. ^_^ I think I'll be visiting soon, so maybe a look around will help me decide.

You don't make sense Nickel you say that BU is giving you $32k in grants and NYU is giving like what under $10k a year and your saying that you're not going to attend either because of the costs? I didn't do that well on my SAT Math but even I know that BU is giving you over 3.2x the amount of grants that NYU is giving you. Wow.

Because both of them means I'd have to take out loans. If I go to BU, they give me 32k in grants and 8k in loans. The cost this year is $48,900 without personal expenses like books and such. I'd still have to take out an extra 8k in loans, which would mean I'd be way in debt even before I got into grad school.

No one can answer this for you but you're unlikely to find more money from a school. I don't know if there are cheaper options but you should weigh those versus the value of your degree.

Well, I figured I could transfer out after two years and your degree only says where you graduated from. I don't think I'd spend the full four years there, but staying there for maybe two years would be cheaper. And at the University of Dallas, since it's so small, everyone gets to go to Rome for a semester.

So $16k in loans for BU or $40k in loans for NYU. I don't see how you are still comparing the two if cost is such an issue for you.
