NYU or Fordham as a communications major

Which school is better to study communications? (prestige and academics)

Also, are there any rankings for this major?

Thanks!

I would probably say NYU

nyu i think. i noticed on the NYU career net that there are a lot of unpaid/paid internships for communications major so i assume its a good one. Fordham is noted for law mostly or at least what i heard. i admit though I know very little about Fordham so i cant say their program isnt good or bad either.

btw i think NYU and fordham are on the same level in academics except Fordham requires a specific theology studies as their school requirement (it's Jesuit school). as for prestige, i think nyu is more popular but thats just my opinion.

NYU is much harder to get into than Fordham. I'm applying to both for Communications; NYU is my first choice because I think as an NYU student you probably have more internship opportunities than a Fordham one.

NYU is more selective; in HS, Fordham was my safety school and NYU a reach. I know Steinhardt has a pretty good communications program. I don't know much about Fordham's communications program. Fordham is still a good school overall, so I'm guessing the communications program is decent, but you have to do further research.

I'm biased as an NYU student, but I would say it's better overall. In HS I considered going to Fordham as I like the college and they gave me a sweet scholarship. One reason I didn't go is because I noticed the kids from my school going to Fordham weren't that bright, they were average B+ students in regular classes. Also, when I went to Fordham open house I had a bad experience - accepted students were put into groups to talk to upperclassmen. I asked one why she chose Fordham, and she said that she debated between Fordham's business school and NYU's stern, and that she felt NYU would be too much of a challenge for her. Then I remember we went around the room and all said why we chose Fordham, and like 3 kids said something like, "well, I love the city but I got rejected by nyu/columbia/barnard, so..." and that turned me off. And the upperclassmen basically insulted other colleges to prop Fordham up for the better part of an hour, including schools like columbia and boston college, which I have to say are way better than them. That was just my experience with Fordham and why I chose not to go. Oh, and I also didn't want the atmosphere of a religious school with required religion classes. Also, at NYU they always bragged about the opportunities in Manhattan, whereas at Fordham they bragged about almost being in Manhattan.

Yeah, Fordham's a borderline safety for me and NYU's more of a reach/target...do you mind posting your stats?

Definitely NYU- great opportunities and interesting concentrations.

frozenlight, were you referring to me?

If so, I had a 3.5 UW, my weighted was like 3.8something. SAT I was 2130 (640M 720R 770W), SAT II's were 680 World Hist and 770 Literature. Took 8 AP classes and the rest were honors/advanced except for electives. EC's were Ital honor society (secretary) school paper, school literary magazine (assistant editor), Tutoring, like 200-250 hrs of community service...my weak point I guess was my gpa (although I had an upward trend, my worst grades were 2 9th grade classes I took in 8th grade, and a bad grade in Art).

^ Yeah, thanks. I'm assuming you were RD?

yep, RD. I should mention I got placed into the Liberal Studies program as well, so I was not a very 'competitive' applicant.

I thought only CAS applicants could be put into LSP?

actually, that's not true. Several of NYU schools place students in LSP (but in CAS, people usually do 2 years and in Tisch they're only required to do 1 year). I know Stern doesn't offer LSP at all though. But anyway I applied to CAS as undecided, and I'm no longer considering a communications major.

^ Oh, ok. I was under the impression you applied to Steinhardt.

oh no sorry CAS. I'm going to be an international relations major, assuming i'm accepted into the ir program.

NYU is definitely more prestigious than Fordham. Also, NYU is situated in an extremely save location. A part of the Fordham campus is located in Northern Bronx which is considered NOT that safe.

I agree with stargazerlilies the fact that at Fordham you have to take theology classes to graduate. In your senior Fordham also requires a capstone Senior Seminar in Values and Moral Choices. Those classes can get very boring.

This is one reason I am transferring out of University of San Diego, because USD requires three theology classes.

I am considering Fordham myself, but I don't like how you have to take theology classes to graduate. I've been at a catholic school since 2nd grade (now a HS junior) so I've been taking theology for a while.

NYU, hands-down.

I love Fordham tho, I'll definitely be applying there.
