btw, I know of at least 3 McGill Chemistry majors from this year's class accepted to Caltech doctorate Chemistry programs, one accepted to Berkely. another three to Northwestern, another to North Carolina and Michigan. McGill's reputation in the graduate academic community is superb. In fact, the difficulty of getting phenomenal grades at McGill is well known--In some of the sciences, many admissions committees to the top grad schools add .5 to the GPA, as a matter of course.

Wow, that's great to know (not being sarcastic, that's effing awesome!).

yeah....the lower GPA thing takes care of itself, from what I've seen...

i dont know what to chooose! i got into both...

but i guess i cant afford nyu. so whooot. mcgill

Funny the Cornell vs. McGill decision. I'm stuck with that exact same right now. Got into both, but am leaning towards Cornell. Seems like a better education, even though McGill is my dream school. Plus, since McGill's tuition is skyrocketing (well, not really, but whatever), it's kind of ify since they haven't said the max yet. I did get a 6k/year bursary which is really awesome, so that's what's tipping me back towards McGill, but I'm still probably gonna head to Cornell.

Just a quick point on THES-QS:
"First off, it is a brand new ranking. 2 years old means it isnt old enough for credibility."
It's five years old, not two. And the alternative is AWRU, which is not better.

btw I think Oxbridge is better than Berkeley but Berkeley is definitely better than McGill.

I don’t know about you but Mcgill seems pretty good to me. Check out their student-led initiative “Pay It Forward” education fund, to raise money online (now, actually!) using social media so the can fund poor indian girls’ education. I like initiatives, i like that people do things differently. creativity is what i look forward in a school.

McGill is superior to NYU. And NY is a colossal pressure cooker.

A lot of people here talked about how they prefer McGill due to its culture and the opportunity to learn French and so on.

But have you ever realised that French is Montreal’s official language? That means everything, the road signs, many friends you meet and the working language will be French. Though its a good opportunity to master French, you really really got to be committed to it.

If you aren’t fluent in French, how could you possibly survive there throughout these 4 years? Unless you don’t mind sticking to the anglophones.

I have heard from people often that you’d need to speak good French in order to have many friends there.

This is reality check for you guys.

spasticity: You need a reality check. I doubt that you have ever been to Montreal or know anyone that has gone to school there.

My unilingual son along with many of his friends from high school are all now in their second year at McGill. All love McGill and Montreal. They are surviving just fine (along with thousands and thousands of Anglophone students in Montreal). Over the years, I have observed many Anglophone students go to McGill for university and none has ever had any difficulty with language.

My French is meagre and I have more than survived on all of my visits to Montreal–almost everyone in the service industry (hotels, restaurants, stores, movie theatres, gas stations, banks, airport, . . .) speaks at least passable English (not so in most other parts of Quebec, including Quebec City, where I still got by, but with a bit more difficulty–often only one or two staff members in a restaurant spoke English there).

With half a million Anglophones, it is not hard to find friends in Montreal. Most of the Francophone people of university age are fluent in English also. Montreal has a huge student population, so there won’t be a friend shortage unless one is as xenophobic as . . …

this thread is ancient. And that spasticity guy and UKdude are probably trolls.

I am having to make the same choice and I think I’m choosing McGill too!
