NYU-Poly (engineering) - any questions?

also, one girl told me she uses the nyu pool. I don’t think she was lying. but regardless, we do have access to the st. francis pool, which is much closer.

Spring is almost here. Any news about renovation of Poly Campus?

Well, there is currently a quasi-snow blizzard. So. I wouldn’t say spring is right here lol, but I haven’t heard word to be honest, no. Poly holds some ‘Town Hall’ meetings where the students can chip in ideas, thoughts, comments, etc. But I haven’t been to those because I had work. It sounds like Poly is looking into acquiring extra space in the general vicinity, but I’m not positive.

hey do you know when nyu poly will become a nyu school?

hey, thanks for answering all these questions!
I have a few of my own…

1) I got an email a few days ago and it said that I had been rejected to NYU CAS but they would like me to forward my application to nyu-poly. Does this mean that I have a good chance at being accepted? My stats are: gpa: UW:3.6 W: 3.9, ACT: 27, alot of ECs, great essays, etc.
When will I hear back do you think?

2) They recommended that I forward my app there cuz of my academic interests. However, I am pre-med and was planning on majoring in bio. Is NYU-Poly still a good school for pre-med?

3) Would I be able to transfer to NYU (manhattan-wash square campus) soph year if I dont like nyu-poly?

4) If I am a manhattan kinda guy and like to see some ladies at my campus, do you think it would be a huge shock going to brooklyn at nyu-poly?

5) Also, not sure if you are familiar with it, but I am also considering Boston U and Loyola U Chicago. Should I choose one of those over NYU-Poly for pre-med?

Thanks for answering!!!

bump 10char…

it may take a bit. I think they might be transferring via the postal service. and then, processing may take some time. but if everything is in, it ought not to take more than a few weeks for a decision.

I don’t know much about it. It’s doable. i’m in electrical, but I know that if you use poly’s resources, you’ll be a fine pick for med schools. we look interesting. engineers-gone-medical. very interesting.

if you get in. poly’s not an easy place to get a perfect gpa at.

why would it be a shock seeing so few girls on campus? it’s an engineering school lol

yeah. maybe. both sounds like they’d be good for medical. they’re also larger campuses, so maybe consider the atmosphere you seek @ college

Precisely when are they going to merge?? or approx. when? from which class will start to get the NYU diploma as well?

^ whoa, sorry, I just saw this post.

They already merged in some ways. For instance, new NYU-Poly students went to the NYU convocation last week. NYU-Poly sure looks different on the interior; less Brooklyn, more Manhattan corporate-style chic. Also, you can visit NYU, take classes at NYU, buy your textbooks at NYU, the freshmen this year are more spoiled just like NYU’s… (it’s okay, I work for lots of different departments at Poly, I’ll discipline them, lol)

Poly may in the next few years lose its relatively new Sustainable Urban Environments and Integrated Digital Media majors, because those sort of exist at NYU; Poly just always taught students to have a background in engineering, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving.

I can’t give you a date because I doubt one exists; there are many shades of gray and many different ways to determine what marks the completion of the merger. I’m a sophomore, and my class will have the NYU diploma, technically. It will say “NYU-Poly” just like NYU-Stern’s would say “NYU-Stern” or whatever.

Poly is now ranked 153 of the Tier 1 schools.

Also, I hear that the admissions will be merging very soon. One of my family friends is an Instructor at Poly and he said that a lot of admissions people got laid off. A good explanation is because their admissions process will be merging with NYU’s.

actually, I worked at the Admissions department last year, and frequently visit, so I know for a fact that not only did we NOT fire people, but we actually hired more Undergraduate (and Grad) Admissions staff members. and honestly, I’m not sure why…I do know that the Admissions counselors were overworked because there were literally like 3 of them at one point. Maybe also for outreach/promotional purposes, I’m not pos.

If you received a dean’s application for nyu poly, is there a higher chance of getting in? And is there a higher chance if you are female?

Just wondering but why the hell would you want to pay ridiculously high tuition for engineering at NYU Poly?

Not only does NYU’s engineering program suck, but it’s located in NYC? Is it just me or does anyone else find it a bit ironic?

That’s like going to Hawaii to learn how to ski!

Save your $60k a year and bring it to a cheaper and better state school like UMichigan or Berkeley where their engineering programs are actually respected.

I would like to introduce myself that i am currently a freshman undergraduate student at Poly and i will attempt to help static75 in answering your questions. I can give you some info about the college but i will leave the major inquiries to static75.

@xjanicecho: Girls generally will have an easier chance of acceptance b/c schools will try their best to balance the genders. However, if your academic standards does not meet those of Poly’s, you will still be rejected. Also, keep in mind that more people (possibly more girls) will be applying as well due to the new NYU name.

@shuffleace:

 1. Please do not flame. It’s rude.
 2. NYC is pinnacle for engineering sites (except for aerospace). Ex: electrical => our electical utility companies, CS => Software firms in Manhattan, CE => headquarters of Banks, phone companies, etc.
 3. The tuition is only rising due to the NYU name. Even so, IT IS STILL CHEAPER THAN NYU ALONE. Because the two alumni has not merged yet, the policies are different meaning that you get more scholarship than that of NYU. Just look at the results. NYU poly’s tuition is $36k while NYU has it for $60k. If you add dorming costs and the lunch program to poly’s pricing, that’s only $10k more, meaning $45k.

I do understand you if you live near michigan, on the other hand, because it is distanced away from NY, but on the upper east cost, Poly and RPI are two of our most elite non-ivy engineering schools. I believe there is ~3 more years until poly is completely merged with NYU (or so i heard from rumors).

I would also like to tell you about my first year experience so far:
WORKLOAD.
Honestly, the work here is not hard, and i mean it. However, the work they ask you to do is TREMENDOUS compared to that of high school. On the first report, I created a 13 page report for my EG 1003 lab class, which was tedious (compared to those lousy two page reports we did back then in HS).

I came from Brooklyn Technical HS, Ranked 63rd in the Nation’s best high schools according to US news report
http://static.usnews.com/documents/best-highschools/gold-schools-2009.pdf</a>
and it prepared me well. Unfortunately, it prepared me for quality over quantity, so i’m facing the bad side of things atm. Students and staff are more than friendly and unlike other college professors, the ones i currently have actually try to keep the classes entertaining. (Not that they entertain us much, but we admire their efforts). I agree with static75 in why so many people drop out, but if you can manage your schedule well, you’ll do more than fine. Also, seeing how there’s a city college right next door (quite literally), i’m glad to receive such a vigorous education rather than slacking off like those people.

@shuffleace: I would also like to add that Poly has good connections with many companies and i would say that NYU almost doubled our corporate connections (i think). On the bad side, because Poly lost it’s own bookstore in the merge with NYU, i find outsider bookstores like Barnes & Nobles to have cheaper books than the NYU bookstore.

hey Janice, I know they send Dean’s Applications to students who score above a certain range on standardized tests, and I do think it would help that you’re a girl, but I’m not sure how much emphasis is placed on it.

shuffleace, I’m on scholarship and financial aid; I’m paying $5000/year. Last year was less, but tuition went up a little bit. also, part of the reason NYU-Poly is awesome at job placement is because of its location…it’s kind of at the center of the world… :p

ronzalpha, I’m a teaching assistant for the class that assigned your 13-page lab report :stuck_out_tongue: hello :)

Nice to meet you, Static75! I wouldn’t be surprised if you were my TA because I know a few, but I’m just not too sure if you are MY TA or not. Are you perhaps a Lab TA or Recitation TA (Writing)?

I’m kind of nervous about my PowerPoint presentation. (Balloon was horrible. x.x)
Hope i have fun! ^.^

I am interested in applying to Poly as a software engineering major from Connecticut. I was wondering if you are allowed to take minor business courses at NYU if you looking for a minor in business.

Appolgies for the double post, I can’t seem to find the ‘Edit’ button.

My second question is if a Poly student is allowed to use NYU’s Bobst Library at any time?

I also recieved the Dean’s Application, so I am considering Poly for it’s fantastic location, post college career oppurtunities and relevence to my interests (comp sci).
