How good is NYU pre-med? I got accepted to Berkeley and UCLA Honors Program, but I think I'd fit in better at NYU. Anybody know?

While we're on the subject of pre-Med, how about the Psychology department? Are there generally many opportunities after graduating with a degree in psychology/psychiatry?

Bump. I'd like to know as well.

and i would really like to know about the neural science program.

I'm not pre-med, but I have many friends at NYU who are. Pre-med like any other collge is not easy and very competitive. The thing is this: With getting into medical school, the most important things are your GPA and MCAT. Since your MCAT score will probably not be influenced by your undergrad, go to a place where you'll likely to get the highest GPA.

I'm confident that NYU has more grade inflation than state schools like Berk and UCLA, esp. with a liberal arts major like psych.

Fourth-year premed student here, waitlisted at three schools. NYU premed is pretty darn good I'd say.

Can't say I know anything about neuro or psych, though. I have classmates who are in those two programs, and they seem to like it well enough.

How good if NYU premed comparing to other schools? Such as Brandeis, BU, University of Rochester, or University of Washington (which I heard has wicked good sciencey programs)

Couldn't tell you that, xflash. You'd have to talk to a student who has experience as a pre-med in those schools.

shades_children- i am a 1st year premed at nyu now... and curiously if you dont mind me asking, what's your major and your gpa?

Dancergal92: Chemistry, 3.76 GPA on my applications. I doubt that has anything to do with my getting waitlisted at three schools - I have an excellent MCAT score, but I was dumb and applied late.

damn, that sucks i'm sorry that you applied late and got waitlisted. Well, at least you got waitlisted at 3 schools, so you have a shot of getting off the waitlist at at least one school.

I am considering being a chem major, did you find it really tough to keep such a high GPA??

and curiously, what science courses did you take your second year?

Dancergal92:

I figure my chances at getting in aren't too bad at this point. Worst comes to worst, I'll reapply next year, and I'll be even better at the process, since I've had a "dress rehearsal."

I was a chem major coming into NYU, so I've taken Honors Gen. Chem. and Organic (except for the first semester sophomore year, which I spent abroad in London). That probably helped my GPA a bit, to be honest, but it doesn't negate the fact that I did well in Physical Chemistry I, II, and III, so I guess my GPA is representative of my interests, work, and talent. To be a successful chem major, you need to like what you study, have talent for it, and work hard - we have a lot of great students in the department. Actually, the CAS '05, '06, and '07 valedictorians have come out of the Chem Department, so you can see we're no slackers.

As for my coursework, I spent the first half of sophomore year in London, and I took Organic I and Physics I there. I came back to NYC for the second half, and continued with those courses, but I transferred to Honors Orgo II.

So as not to flood this message board with stuff, if you have particular chemistry questions, feel free to PM me, Dancergal92.
