I am going to be a freshman next year and I still haven't chosen where I will be attending. I am hoping to attend medical school after undergrad, hence im pre-med. I have narrowed my choices down to UCLA or NYU. I know UCLA has a hospital where I can volunteer and they have numerous programs where I can internship for doctors offices and etc...(only because I live a few blocks away from UCLA so i've become familiar with it)
I am not quite sure what NYU has to offer as far as a pre-med student..
I was really appreciate help on what NYU has to offer and what school would be a smarter decision. Financially, there is no problem..both schools are the same. Do a lot of NYU students get accepted to good Medical schools like UCLA? Does anyone know the percentage of NYU undergrads who go on to medical school? Is there any possible way I can view what schools they go on to?

NYU also has a powerful pre-med program and a large number of medical affiliates nearby that you could volunteer at. Both are great for medical school, I would pick on fit and based on if you want to live east or west coast.

I am originally from CA, but now live in NY because I am a 2nd year medical student at New York Med and I went to undergrad at UCLA. I can’t tell you anything about going to NYU as an undergrad, but I can say that UCLA prepared me very well for medical school. Many of my current classmates went to UCLA, but I’m not aware of any from NYU. That said, there are a million med schools in the NY area, so maybe they all chose to go somewhere cheaper (my med school is a private med school, so tuition is sky-high but being a Californian, I couldn’t be too picky about the cost).

I’m also not aware of NYU having a lot of biomedical research… but someone correct me if I’m wrong. Having research experience is important if you’re serious about going into medicine, and there were so many labs to choose from at UCLA that I never had a problem finding one to join.

I know that premeds are very anxious about getting into med school (I was there once, after all - I understand the feeling). But what I want to stress is that it doesn’t matter where you go. It matters what you DO when you’re there. That said, it is more competitive to get into a med school if you’re a Californian - our CA med schools are all highly ranked and state residency doesn’t give us a leg up. This is why a large number of CA premeds end up attending NY med schools.

This means that if you did decide to attend NYU and could claim New York residency, that might help you a bit more in applying to NY schools like the SUNYs. But really, this shouldn’t be the thing that decides where you go for undergrad. You should go to a place where you feel like you fit in and can do your best - where you can really excel and study hard. Have you visited NYU yet? Moving to NY and being in NYC was incredibly overwhelming for me the first time. To be honest, I would have been so distracted by the city that I’m not sure I could have focused well at that stage in my life (as an undergrad, I mean).

That said, college was the best time of my life. You’ll never feel quite that young and energetic again. So between those 2 particular choices - go where you WANT to go, not because you feel like it’ll help you get into med school. :)

Why do you need a new thread, when you have a current thread regarding this issue?

We know that you live very close to UCLA and therefore it will be very inexpensive for you to go there.

You mentioned that it will cost you a LOT more to go to NYU. So, who will be paying for NYU? What are your parents saying about what they’ll pay and where you should go?
