I am planning on applying to NYU for admission in the fall of 2011, and naturally, I am on their mailing list. I was reading one of the articles that was mailed to me, and one of the students had received a scholarship called the Presidential Scholarship. The scholarship required that students maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6 at NYU, maintain leadership positions, and get involved in interning. In return, they receive a large amount of financial aid and opportunities to study abroad freshman and sophomore years. Just kind of curious, has anybody received this scholarship, and what are some the general requirements to receive it?

The top 5-10% of the incoming freshman in CAS get invited to join. After that, you just have to keep up the requirements to get all those bonuses, like cheap study abroad, financial aid, and research opportunities.

Just CAS?
I want to apply to Gallatin…And there’s definitely no way that I could pay for NYU and study abroad.

Study abroad doesn’t cost extra; often it’s cheaper than NYU itself, because the tuition is the same, and housing is usually cheaper. NYU has it’s own satellite campuses, so it’s all one system. And the scholarships are really nice, $10-25k plus per year

I happen to be in the program and am not receiving any financial assistance. NYU will not give you money just because you are in the Presidential Honors Scholars program. You still must demonstrate financial need in order to be rewarded aid.

^^^Correct----though you do still receive the financial benefit of the freshman and sophomore Scholar trips abroad even if you don’t demonstrate enough financial need to qualify for a scholarship.

Sooo,
does it only apply to CAS students?

CASmom,
I still don’t consider that financial aid because it is not a scholarship…

Is it possible for people who are not invited to join to be invited after freshman year? Or later in the CAS career?

I do not think you can be invited but you can apply after freshman year if you meet al the requirements for the program.

Are you awarded scholarships based on what the admissions committee think? or Do you apply for it? Any help would be helpful.

Ignite7,

If you are talking about scholarship money: In regards to the Presidential Honors Scholar program, if invited to join, you are awarded scholarship money based on demonstrated financial need. The admissions committee does not assess your financial aid application.

If you are talking about just being in the program itself: You can be invited as an incoming freshman based on the assessment by the admissions committee. If you were not invited as an incoming freshman, you may apply to participate in the program after your freshman year if you meet all of the requirements.

Thank you ylmc123 that clarifies it all to me!
