So the other day I finally got my "official" acceptance from NYU and as expected, the financial aid was average, nothing more. Seeing as how I expect similar amounts from school just as good if not better than NYU without the insane city expenses, I was ready to just ignore the school completely, but then I noticed another letter. Apparently, I have been invited to the Presidential Honors Scholars program which entails some form of additional scholarship. Does anyone know just how substantial (or not) this award is, because if it covers any respectable amount, I may reconsider forsaking NYU so early in the game.

I got in to that too, and I’m trying to figure out if it is the same scholarship that is mentioned in the finaid letter.

my roommate is in this program. i remember she had to participate in an honors seminar and a scholars seminar once every week. they also offered her to go to Florence over winter break for around 300 dollars…i think they offer that to scholars every year. and i think there is also a research stipend…not sure though.

Anyone find out more about this? I finally got my official packet today and got the standard 25K but the pres. scholars letter made it sound like more was available.

I finally got around to calling the financial aid office and apparently the presidential scholarship was already included in our FA packages. I guess that’s why my package was mediocre rather than NYU’s average dismal for most people. I honestly don’t understand how NYU expects to keep any people it offers this program to; if they qualify, they’ve likely received offers from other schools that actually have money to give or at least a better programs in general. Oh well.

Maybe NYU just wants rich people. Haha.

I got the $25k scholarship from NYU when I was accepted. Of course, in 2003 that money went a little further than it did in 2007, when I graduated.

Are they still offering you guys those almost entirely free trips? There was one over winter break freshman year, and there was another over spring break my sophomore year. That opportunity played a big part in my decision to go to NYU - they sure didn’t skimp on us back then. We flew on British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and stayed in 200-300 euro/night hotels, all on NYU’s dime. It was a great time.

@shades

they still don’t skimp on the trips. one of my friends went to Madrid on spring break with CAS scholars and he said it was insane.

Yeah, spring break '05 was Madrid for me… it was great.

Does anyone know what the program is really like? I hadn’t heard about it until I was accepted so the only information I have is from NYU, so obviously they make it seem pretty great. Are there any other benefits besides the awesome trips?

If it’s anything like it was when I was there, the best thing about the program is the trips. To be honest, there are a lot of boring meetings, but they can be nice if you meet like-minded people there. It’s also a nice little resume-booster for your college years.

To any current or previous presidential honors scholars…what’s the deal with the scholarship?

What are you asking? What’s the “deal”? It’s a scholarship. It’s yours to keep even if you decide not to participate in the program - at least, that’s how it was when I was there. (If this is your concern, you should ask just to make sure.)

But how much is it? DS got the letter saying he was invited to join and that there would be a scholarship–But no info on how much! At $54k per year this place is out of the question without at least 20k in merit money.

My scholarship offer came with my acceptance packet, which also had the invitation to be a part of the Scholars program. In short, everything came in the big envelope. If you think you’re missing something, then you should call the school to ask.
