question about presidential honors program

I was offered a spot in the Presidential Scholars Honors Program at NYU CAS. From what I've read here, this is supposed to entail a 25,000 dollar scholarship. However, I didn't receive a financial aid letter in my packet; when i called the financial aid office, they said that they did not receive my FAFSA and my merit scholarship is only 10,000 dollars.

So what's going on? Do some Scholars not get the 25 grand or what?

Thanks a lot.

anyone, please?

sabreblade -- the same thing happened to me...CALL! They bumped mine up to $25,000.

i heard that only some scholars get 25,000. the ones who get 25K are the ones who were also sent plane tickets to go to nyu over the weekend of april 1-3. they are called deans scholars, but participate in the presidential honors program.

Hmm, I got $15K, perhaps I should call and give it the old college try.

yeah i did call. and they refused to give me more than ten thou. plus zero financial aid.

so uh yeah nyu is out i guess.

wut exactly does the presidential honors program entail?

presidential honors means u are special and very smart. they want u to participate in an exclusive program and u will get to preview the study abroad in ur fresh and soph years for a small fee or maybe even free. many of these people get merit scholarships. about 50 of them get 25K scholarship. this is the most u can get. these people will be given special attention bc they are way smart!

My friend is in the Presidential Honors Program w/a 10K scholarship and she got to go to Florence in January of her Freshman year for I THINK somewhere in the realm of $200.

i'm actually in a similar situation but for the stern scholars program. i didn't get any money from them so I'm just thinking isn't it a little unfair that some stern scholars get a $20,000 scholarship while others get none?

i got a stern scholarhsip for 20k, but no stern scholars thingy, im quite confused

quite confused as well. was your's completely need based? i really don't know how that program works or where the line is between merit aid and need-based aid.

i got a lewis rudin scholarship so i wonder if that's why i didn't get any money from the stern scholars program. i don't want to sound greedy or anything but i would've liked at least a little bit of money. it could definitely have helped.

you think if we call they could let us inteo the program?

My daughter got admitted to the Stern Scholar program, but got zero scholarship or financial aid. Wonder why???

I got one of the $25k scholarships (and the Presidential Honors thing) but didn't get the phone call/free plane ride. I was completely not expecting it when I opened my acceptance letter.

Does anyone know what it takes to get a scholarship? Is there a difference between scholarships and financial aid? I always thought that scholarships were not financial aid, and they were based purely on academic excellence.

yeah there is a difference. NYU is definitely not known for giving out good purely need-based financial aid. however, if they really want you to attend, they will give you (or your son/daughter) additional aid based on merit.

scholarships are NOT financial aid...they are based on merit...u were correct parent2005

I got into the Presidential Scholars Honors thingy and I got the 25k purely merit based (I applied for no need-based aid).

However, the 25k does not necessarily entail the D.E.A.N scholarship, as I was not sent plane tickets or any invites like birdofprey425, so I think it's something just a bit different.

Possible free trip abroad = AWESOME, should be some fun times.

What did you did to get this 25K? and what are your grades/achievements?
