@lenasharb I believe some of my EC’s are also Chinese, since I took Mandarin as well but…what a big loss for us. We screwed up our future. If there is any hope for us, I hope we succeed. If not, I wish you the best of luck in the future.
I was accepted into NYU Tisch for Film and Television production!
ACT: 32
GPA 93 (AP classes not weighted)
5 APs including 3 this year
Scholarship: 43k for this year and 3k work study. the rest is loans. this is a lot more than I thought I’d get and I’m so greatful, but I still don’t know if I can afford it.
@Panda_juice Honestly, if I really wanted NYU Stern, I may reapply ED next year. Many of my classmates accepted ED2 to Stern this year took a less rigorous courseload than I did, so I have much reason to believe that the only reason I was considered for Shanghai is because of my race and Mandarin background and not my merits. This is just cruel and unfair for NYU to do this. Any desperate applicant would check off all options just for the sake of it, but this just came back to bite me. Hopefully, you have better options too. Best of luck to you.
@lagurlll . and @YoungOne4 . Same boat over here $75K in loans. My understanding in reviewing the NYU website iis that they give “very few” merit only schollys. Almost all schollys are based on a combination of need and merit. This is unlike most other schools which view them as separate decision processes. NYU also does not commit to meeting all of your financial need as many other schools do. Reality is that they can fill up the classrooms with full pay very qualified kids. As an example, during our campus visit, one family traveled there from Switzerland and another from Tahiti. These folks could easily stroke a big check if accepted. Good luck. Lots of decisions between now and May 1.
Thanks so much for these insights, @SoCratz. Bummed that merit is not a separate process as you say, esp since it happened that way at other schools. Aaarrgh.
Anyone get “Inquiry access denied” when you try to find the financial aid you received in View My Financial Aid Summary?
@lenasharb honestly, I knew that that would happen if you added NYU’s other schools to your preferences. I mean think about it, most people who apply to NYU generally want to attend the New York campus for obvious reasons, so if NYU can get people to want to attend their Shanghai and Abu Dhabi campus’s then you bet they’re going to assign you there. Going to the New York campus is extremely competitive because of the high demand, so it’s understandable that NYU chose to admit you to Shanghai because it is less of a burden on their part. I hope you can somehow find a way to see if they’ll switch you over though, maybe they can. Try to explain that you were confused in the application process
Not possible
^Maybe this person can go to NYU Shanghai for a year, imagine that it’s just a “study abroad location”, then put in an external transfer to the New York campus?
@GiannaC3 Thank you for your reply. I thought the process would be like Carnegie Mellon’s where you receive multiple decisions for several schools, not just one decision. This policy isn’t addressed too clearly anywhere on their websites either. If anyone can find where exactly on their website they explain how this works, that would be very much appreciated. Perhaps this will be helpful to future applicants too. Can see how my application can “fit” Shanghai, being Asian and having taken Mandarin and all. Hopefully, future applicants can learn from my mistake and fill out applications wisely.
@lenasharb You’re right. In answering the prompt: “Why NYU?” a student may be tempted to write all about NYU New York, thinking it will generally fit all campuses.
@Mmrosa LOL my entire essay screamed Stern and NYC but they still pushed me to Shanghai
@lenasharb lol Will you attend NYUSH?
My essay literally only mentioned stern and NYC and nothing about Shanghai but i got Shanghai…makes lots of sense I do not think I am going to nyush though, id rather stay here. Transfers are possible but idk if I want to risk it.
@lagurlll I’m pretty sure they are merit based scholarships, cause I got one and I know my family makes too much to get any need-based scholarships. Even with that though, NYU is still crazy expensive…I can’t believe the cost of attendance is almost $80,000
But I got into Tisch for Film and Television :D!! Honestly still in shock rn, can’t believe I actually got in, and also as an MLK scholar…anyone else get the MLK scholarship?
@collegegurl101 what other film schools did you apply/get into?
My daughter was also accepted to NYU Tisch for Screenwriting with a $35k Scholarship. However, it’s still crazy expensive :-S . We can’t afford it. Same for Emerson College, even with the scholarship. We need a miracle! She got rejected to UCLA and USC for film and accepted to UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley for film as well. We have decisions to make. Congratulations to all that got accepted and all students here. A driven student will thrive anywhere! My heart is with all of you future leaders.
Thanks! And congratulations to you, too:)
I have no idea, but when the letter comes in the mail I’ll find out and let you know.
