Planning to ED2 to Stern but wondering if there are any merit scholarship(s) at all. This is such a good school but it is so stingy - unlike most great schools like Ivy, Stanford, UChicago, etc.
Any comments?

Yes there is - I think the stingy comment might be a misconception and that almost prevented me from applying
I got a full tuition scholarship to Stern and know several others as well. FA is also pretty good as I know people who had very low income and ended up getting almost everything paid for I believe
I find that Stern will shell out merit scholarships for applicants that they really want
@qwertyzxc If you got merit aid from Stern, then your merit scholarship was still based on you having financial need. Yes, NYU will give you more if they like you and will label it as merit aid, but you still need to qualify for financial aid. If your EFC indicates no need, you will not be considered for those merit awards.
If you do not qualify for financial aid, you will not be considered for any merit aid other than the MLK scholarship if you apply to Stern. In Steinhardt, there are still merit scholarships that are tied to talent that are not needed based.
What you said is actually not true because I know an international student who goes to Stern on a full-tuition merit scholarship and obviously international students can’t qualify for FA
yes the MLK is the big one NYU gives out but there are others that Stern gives out- like the John Paulson Scholarship etc. that is not based on financial need.
Yes, some international students may get financial aid. There is NO merit aid without need given by Stern.
@qwertyzxc That is false. International students can qualify for FA. Please see my thread at the top of the NYU subb-page for how FA works at NYU. International students scholarships are still based on need. All scholarship assessment is done in the same way.
I think John Paulson is given out based on merit - not sure about that however
I can definitely attest to merit scholarships given by NYU (so not specifically by Stern but Stern students get it as well)
@qwertyzxc Sorry but you are wrong. Merit aid is NOT given out unless there is need. I am on my 2nd child at NYU and have spoken numerous times to department heads and FA office. Merit aid–without need–is given out for some talent programs in the RD round and for a few special programs like MLK but that is all. Everything else is given out to candidates who show (some) financial need. There is no merit aid without need at Stern.
Yes, people with financial need will get “merit” scholarships in addition to other financial aid grants, but to qualify for those merit scholarships, you still must qualify for financial aid. If NYU really wants you, they will add these merit scholarships to your financial aid package. But students without need will NOT qualify for these merit scholarships. True merit aid is given out without regard to need. The merit aid given out to students at NYU is still tied to the fact that they have some need (except for talent and MLK).
The sad story is the wrong understanding of “merit” and “need”. Merit is for those students who should be applauded for their accomplishments. “Need” is certainly a compassionate aspect that is highly commendable in order to help those “in need”.
Need and merit should NOT be mixed up - as is today.
@unskoolfish - That is what I said - there are a few true merit aid scholarships given upon admission (like MLK, Smilow - which is for science, Dean’s Honors Scholar for CAS students, and a couple of other talent ones like you said). You may have spoken to department heads and the FA office but being a recipient of one of these true merit aid scholarships and having been to scholars weekend (which is a separate weekend for students who received true merit aid), I am very familiar with the different merit scholarships that students at NYU receive.
They are not specific to Stern but rather to the entire school of which Stern students are a subsect of.
@qwertyzxc Yes, I agree. I said that there are several merit scholarships–but very few-- and they are mostly all-university merit scholarships or extremely specific. But there are no Stern merit scholarships. The thing with NYU is that they name financial aid with scholarship names, and then people assume that they are available to everyone–including those without need–and they are not.
Im surprised that the CAS deans honors scholarships still comes with merit $. Steinhardt no longer gives merit $ (no need) to their scholars and Tisch did away with the program entirely.
CAS Presidential Honors Scholars only sometimes comes with money, and it’s money of the “merit” (but actually financial aid) sort. Most people in the honors scholars program don’t get any money.
