I have been accepted into both of these schools, and I was wondering how the music programs, particularly in violin and composition, compare. Thanks for any advice.

Both are long established and well respected.

There are more options for violin instructors at NYU, and the list has a number of names that “pop”, at least from the standpoint of an east coast/New England area recognition factor.

New York in and of itself is a draw for many. Others view the draw of Florida and the climate/lifestyle as positive. Depends what one is lookng for.

NYU is expensive, and has a reputation for being tight-fisted with talent, merit, and need based aid. Frost is less expensive, and has a more generous policy of aid in general.

Have you visited each and had lessons with faculty? Do you have studio assignments in hand, and a teacher preference? NYU has a strong reputation for composition, but the key there seems to be finding a style and preference for a department, mentors that will allow you to develop your own compositional voice. There are others more qualified than I to address composition options and programs.

Some basic questions that may help

Is your focus violin performance or composition, or a dual pursuit? I’ve added your two acceptances to our list here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a.html, but if you would specify a major and any other music school acceptances, I’d be happy to add those as well.

Hi makemusic! Congrats on getting into 2 great music programs. I was also accepted at NYU Steinhardt for violin this year, although I will be attending SFCM instead. Who would you be studying violin with at NYU? The violin faculty, as violadad mentioned, is well-regarded. Naoko Tanaka, who I have had several lessons with, is excellent. Very insightful. She is also on faculty at Juilliard. I have heard wonderful things about Stephanie Chase; she is a fantastic player and many people love her teaching style. A friend of mine studies with Anton Miller; she has really benefitted from working with him, and enjoys his teaching style. I don’t know much about Fulkerson, Beaver, or Delmoni, but they all have impressive resumes. A friend of mine who is studying in CAS also takes composition lessons at Steinhardt, and was just telling me yesterday how much he enjoys it. He is also a violinist.

I don’t know much about Frost, but if you have any questions about NYU (student life, the music scene, etc.), I think I could help you. I’m pretty familiar with the school, so Private Message me if you want.

Are the schools financially comparable? Even with a large scholarship from Steinhardt, NYU was too expensive for me. Frost might be the better option if it is a lot cheaper.

Good luck making a decision, and congratulations again!

my friend studies with stephanie chase. she has a very strong resume. i think theres someone on the faculty there who teaches at oberlin as well. i think if u compare nyu and miami, the faculty at nyu are stronger, violin-wise

I worked with Naoko Tanaka during the summer way back when, and despite the short amount of time spent with her she really made a huge difference in the way I played. I also remember that she was very nice and very thoughtful.
