I'm currently a 14 year old high school freshmen in Pittsburgh and i'd just kill to get accepted to NYU for directing. I've had some experience:
I was a "featured" extra in the movie The Road with Viggo Mortensen and have taken dozens of acting and film classes at the casting agencies in the city. I am the photographer at our town's annual fall festival and I filmed the football games for the Varsity team. We edit each game's footage and make a short movie to broadcast at the beginning of the day each Monday after the games. Also, I have a 3.5 GPA and take all advanced courses in my school. I have not taken the SATs yet though. I make short movies constantly with iMovie and plan on getting an internship at one of the casting agencies in the city. I'm just obsessed with film general. I've lettered on the track team for 2 years and have played soccer for 11 years. I started every game this JV Soccer season and got to play up on Varsity for multiple games. Will some of this stuff give me an extra edge in getting accepted? If not can you give me some tips? I'll really appreciate a response. Thanks!

You sound like the perfect candidate for the things I noted in my thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/858143-advice-future-film-production-majors.html

Just keep it up!!

ok thanks!

ahahaha…sorry, I just laughed so hard when you said you were a “featured extra.” Lol, I’m not mocking or anything, it just reminds me of Ricky Gervais’ “The Extras”
Good luck mate!

You are well on your way! NYU has very high standards for admission. Be sure you do as well as you can in the most difficult courses you can take. Academics matter! Check out digmedias advice on another part of this forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/858143-advice-future-film-production-majors.html
He makes some very good suggestions. My son is also passionate about film (like you!) He has submitted his films to a few film festivals and has won some awards. Consider doing that with you films- it is not only fun to make films- its great to get some feedback, and maybe even a few showings of your film- that can only help your chances.

good job so far. I’d make another suggestion which is you might want to trade some time acting for making more movies if directing is what you really want to do. See if you can direct a school play or better yet write and direct one. That’s what I did. Directing is storytelling so writing is VERY important. Also, you might want to start editing with either Avid or a similar program since that’s pretty much the industry standard. Good luck.
