I got into both NYU Tisch and Harvard. A total shock.

I got into Tisch for film. I even got selected as a Tisch University Scholar.
It IS my #1 choice - it is the perfect place for my goals and career aspirations in life. However, I have no money... I mean really have NO money (both parents are unemployed, on SS)... I am willing to take the debt for NYU, but now I'm wondering "is it worth it?"...

Because...I also got into Harvard (just found out today). I qualify for a FULL RIDE under their Financial Aid Initiative. But I know, while Harvard has amazing opportunities for me, Tisch is where I feel I should really be for film.

So... I was wondering if I could get some input on this situation... debt & Tisch, or financial comfort & Harvard?

I think there was a member here who picked Tisch last year - the username I believe began with "safia" ... Perhaps I can get some advice from her...if she is still around...?

Thanks for anyone who can give input - please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to complain, I'm very happy that I have been given both of these opportunities. I posted a similar thread on the College Admissions board, but I realized that most people over there might not understand the prestige of NYU Tisch for us film/theatre kids.

First of all, Congratulations! as for which school to pick, pick where you feel you belong for you are going to more productive in the environment you prefer. go to the Tisch scholars meet and speak with current students and see what NYU has to offer and then make ur decision. they are both awesome schools, but keep in mind that there is always a degree of uncertainty associated with film/drama major. Tisch is very well renowned and if you see yourself here, definetely attend. Harvard is not that bad of a school either, it only #1 in the US and possibly the world. if you are sure of your destiny, all path lead to the same point.

If you absolutely know film is your passion, then Tisch is the better choice. The arts at the Ivies, except Yale, are alright but not really outstanding.

To the common kid (like me), Harvard would be an easy choice. I don't know anything about NYU Tisch. You should definitely explore the program, visit the campus, and get the inside scoop on what the college experience is really like. If you really want to pursue your passion, film, go for NYU. But maybe you're not so sure...and you might not want to limit yourself to that field...Harvard would keep your options open(unless you would like to switch into another college at NYU). Go with the college is fits you best!

Have you thought about going to Harvard and then going to NYU Tisch Film for graduate school? Also, I am currently a junior at Tisch in the film program and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about it. Good luck.

Ditto to what djlr181 has said. I would really investigate this option because it seems highly possible to me that you could do both--essentially have your cake and eat it too. A full ride to Harvard is an amazing opportunity which you have obviously earned though hard work. I am sure there are opportunities you could find and/or create to continue to develop your creative talents in film while at Harvard. Attending Harvard would provide you not only an outstanding education and excellent contacts, but more importantly, would allow you the opportunity to pursue your artistic interests in grad school without the stress of massive educational debt repayments looming. Seems to me that could somewhat stifle one's creativity.

I would hate for you to regret some day in the future having passed Harvard up.

Tisch is a unique opportunity for you to follow your dreams and get a sound academic background at NYU. There is an interesting study that shows that generally, the best predictor of financial succes after college is not where you go, but where you got accepted. In other words, it is the attributes that made you an attractive candidate that will serve you later in life more that the school you choose to attend. http://www.terry.uga.edu/~dmustard/courses/e4850/x-Dale.pdf
You should go where you will be happiest.

I agree with DramaMom. BUT, I'd like to point out that while Harvard may not be up to par with Tisch, it DOES probably have the most prestige than any other school in the world (which will still get you amazing connections--think potential financial backers) and you'll be getting a FREE ride to it. The free ride is the BEST part because that means that all the loans you were willing to and would have taken out for undergrad will be available for you for graduate school!

This is a tough decision, but personally, I don't think choosing either will be a bad decision. Both come out about even. :) Good luck.
