Actually, you can live a reasonable lifestyle in Palms if you know how to shop.

Otherwise, yes, it's expensive. However, dorms now cost far more than living off-campus. Trust me, I worked for them and lived in them my last two years at UCLA.

NYU is very expensive too. I think I'm going to end up paying over $50,000 annually for Tisch.

My top schools were NYU, USC and UCLA - but upon receiving an early decision acceptance to Tisch I decided it was the place for me. Seperate from the programs you need to consider the cities, NY and LA are totally different environments.

Growing up in Toronto I'm more partial to the East Coast life, which is very different from the West Coast mentality - so New York was the obvious choice.

As far as film and television opportunities go I will have to disagree with j3ff. I happen to know that there are probably more film opportunities in New York over Los Angeles. While LA has the Hollywood image, the big apple is home to a lot of the major casting directors and influential agents.

For me one of the other major factors in deciding to go to NY or UCLA or USC is the opportunity to be placed in a professional New York acting studio in my first year, the opportunity to take other liberal arts courses to broaden my acedemic base, and the prospect of being show cased to the top talent agents in the city :).

Do you live in Texas? if so, UT is a great deal. If you're certain about pursuing film though, I know NYU has a top musical theatre program with Tisch, but I think UCLA would probably be better for movies, i think NYU tends to be more performance/broadway based, whereas UCLA is more film-based (just look at their locations). But if you live in texas and don't know what you want to major in, i'd say UT is the best choice.
