Since both are located in the same area (if I am right) I was wondering the core differences between the two schools. Yeah, Columbia is the prestigious ivy (and I got a straight rejection), but is NYU superior to Columbia in some aspects, socially and academically? I just feel like going to the "second best school" in NYC...

stern and tisch.

second transat, stern and tisch are NYU's standout programs. I think the math department is also like number 1. As for other nyu undergrad programs, they are as well respected as columbia's

IMO, NYU has strengths in Business and the Arts. I know that the Math department is one of the best in the world, and NYU's law school is a ranked a bit higher than Columbia's ;)

But yeah, can't go wrong with Columbia...

Er, no, Columbia's name is bigger, and most NYU students accept that in the more liberal arts fields, Columbia is usually seen as better. But Columbia students have a healthy amount of respect for some of our programs, like the ones mentioned above. There's no equivalent, really, of Stern and Tisch up there. And applied mathematics is number one, yes. In the end, it doesn't make much of a difference which one you go to.

Socially, NYU trumps Columbia. No question. There's nothing to do up there, and their dorms suck. :) Besides, J-Sex is infinitely better than Lee Bollinger.

Don't worry about it... I have heard of people who got rejected from NYU and got into Columbia.

EDIT: Yeah, the law school is better here too. But undergrad-wise, see above.

NYU is also a much better location, I think.

The Village is far more interesting and lively than Upper West Side.

Columbia is small in size compare to NYU. Plus location location location, NYU has better location than Columbia.

Columbia is superior in terms of overall quality of undergraduate education.
NYU beats Columbia solely in terms of location and social life, but not by far.

One goes to college to learn, primarily...

I got rejected from Columbia, too, lol.

But don't feel bad that you're going to NYU, the "second best school", and if someone tells you that... ignore them. There are people at NYU smarter than people at Columbia, there are people at state schools smarter than people at NYU (and Columbia, for that matter). College admissions is a crapshoot, and it's what you make of the school. There are plenty of Ivy kids who get crappy GPAs and end up going to a third-tier grad school.

nicely put gkc4.

Stern, Tisch & philosophy.

my bad i forgot a word
stern and tisch are NYU's standout programs. I think the math department is also like number 1. As for other nyu undergrad programs, they are not as well respected as columbia's

You're wrong. Philosophy, Linguistics, and Art History (Fine Arts) are superior. There are likely others of equal stature if you research.

but even if you major in those fields, no one will take nyu over columbia. get over with it.

i would take nyu over columbia anyday. living in the ghetto? err... and nyu's awesome!

I got waitlisted at Columbia and got into NYU GSP. xD I think I'd rather go to Columbia if I get in simply because I feel their financial aid would be better. =/

hey, which one has a better program for near/middle eastern studies?

gkc4 i TOTALLY agree with NYU is my dream school and yes its what you make of your college experience that really matters!

Good luck

Lets be serious NYU is expensive and gives crappy financial aid. Columbia gives way better financial aid. Both are great schools, but Columbia has the bigger name. Stern and Tisch are amazing schools, Columbia is beat there. NYU is in the Village and is more connected with the city. Columbia is like in the city but isolated from it.

No, Columbia beats NYU in every single concentration possible, hands down. Even Stern loses to Columbia end of story, although the gap is much closer than the other departments in NYU. I keep hearing that NYU is 1st ranking in philosophy and math blah blah blah; let me tell you, EVERYONE in the street will be much more impressed by a philosophy/math degree from Columbia than from NYU, regardless of rankings and other BS. The only aspect that NYU beats Columbia in is location - Lower Manhattan ftw lol

*PS. no biases
