NYU vs USC vs UMichigan vs Fordham vs Villanova vs Notre Dame

I wanted to get some insight as to what life is like for these colleges. How are academics? Student life? Surrounding area? Internship opportunities? etc.

Note: I am specifically interested in International Business & Marketing as my desired double major

michigan has by far the best biz school

I don’t think there is that much of a difference between Ross, Marshall, Stern and Mendoza at the undergraduate level. They are all considered very good. For student life and surrounding area, it really depends on personal choice. That’s a matter of personal preference. NYU is very urban, most of the other schools are suburban. Michigan, Notre Dame and USC have big athletic traditions, Fordham and NYU not so much. If finances are a concern, you may want to get your financial aid packages before making a decision.

Bloomberg has a ranking of undergrad biz schools (probably better ranking than USNews): http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-best-undergrad-business-schools/ Villanova, ND # 1,2

It’s a different ranking than grad schools, which it should be.

insanedreamer, you honestly believe Wharton should be ranked out of the top 15?

Stern or Ross would be tough to beat for the business specialties you mention, though as @Alexandre states, you could comfortably choose from several of your academically excellent choices based on their more general attributes.

Marshall or Moore? (Moore could be excellent for your interests.)

Notrde dame NYU and Michigan are all top notch business schools USC i think a step below if you’re in state for Michigan I would definitely go there. If not and you’re gonna be a finance major and can afford the price tag i’d probablly select NYU Stern

A few comments…

  1. These are all strong programs although the environments are quite different. You are looking at schools that are urban/suburban, religious v non-sectarian, big time sports v minimal sports etc. What do you want in a college?

  2. I would suggest you visit if possible. For now get your hands on some good college guide books (ex. Fiske, Princeton Review, Insiders Guide) at your guidance dept. or library to read up on the schools.

  3. You should consider if if you get a direct admit to the business school or not. Many schools on your list will accept you directly into the b-school, others (such as UM) give “pre-admits” to some students and make the rest apply after a year. If you don’t get a pre-admit to these schools and have to apply then you need to research the chances of getting in. For example I know a number of people who went to UM and then could not get into Ross. http://michiganross.umich.edu/programs/bba/class-profile

4 ) I would disagree with @guitar321 and say that schools such as NYU and ND are viewed as being on par with Ross at UM. (In the real world nobody checks to see if the USNWR undergraduate b-school ranking is 4 or 5 or 9).

  1. @insanedreamer The Bloomberg rankings are so off the mark that Bloomberg said that they will no longer do undergraduate b-school rankings. The criteria used in the ranking were flawed. I’m not a big believer in rankings but the USNWR rankings are better.

  2. I imagine Fordham is your safety, but FWIW my S went to Gabelli at Fordham – he had a great experience and got into a top grad program in his area. If you are a viable candidate for the other schools on your list, you might get merit aid at Fordham.

^^^Additional comment
see where you get in, see what is affordable and go from there…

I agree that Ross is on par with Stern and ND

My peronsal ranking would be as follows, taking into account business school strength, campus, university environment, and other non-academic factors:

NYU
Michigan
USC
ND
Nova
Fordham
