if interested in business should i go to university of michigan-ann arbor or nyu?
I'm pretty sure U. Mich. is #2 or #3 while NYU is #5 in business undergrad rankings, but should i pick NYU because of its obvious benefits of location?

If you want to =/

well, if u ever change your mind umich is a much better school.

Stern is actually #2 behind Wharton. But I would chose NYU because of the overall name recognition and that it's in NYC. Because of it's location, it has more connections with the major firms.

ok thanks...didnt provide much help
derekc4- umich is better school
thisshhhisbananas- nyu has better connections

same stuff i said at the begining... :(

Honestly wont make any difference at all for banking/ consulting. The same firms recruit at both places. For media/ retail/ Advertising NYU has the edge due to location, but few business majors pursue these fields.

So if you want to bank/ consult choose based on what type of school you want because the academics/ opportunities won't matter. These are very different places.

New Question -
Where do you want too be for four years, Ann Arbor or NYC? I personally would pick Ann Arbor because I think college towns are a blast. Others prefer the individualism of NYU.

ah, the age old question. sponge bob, i was actually in the SAME exact predicament as you 4 months ago. i had gotten into michigan and nyu wanting to study business. first you have to ask yourself, where do you plan on working/living after graduation? generally speaking, mich-ross has a better reputation out west and in the mid-west while nyu stern has it's roots in the east. secondly, what field of business do you want to study? nyu finance is 2nd only to wharton while michigan's int'l business is top in the country. third, do you want to live in a fast-paced environment or do you want the traditional college experience? also visit both schools to see which school you like better.

in the end, i picked nyu and i'll explain why:
1) much closer to home, it's a lot easier to move things in and out of my dorm and my house is about 40 minutes away by car. plus i grew up in the area so im really comfortable in nyc.
2) at the time, you had to reapply to the business school at michigan after your soph year while nyu's business program is a 4 year program. now ross has that preferred admissions program so you might consider that too.
3) i planned to work in the city after graduation. (note ross also has an excellent reputation in the city.)
4) michigan IS the better overall school. but i didn't want to have to do deal with another admissions process (to the bus. school) after my soph year.
5) cost was not a factor as michigan was about 38k OOS while nyu was 45k. after factoring in travel expenses michigan would've come out to roughly 40 thousand a year. I'm fortunate enough to have parents who can pay full tuition without financial burden.

if michigan had a 4 year business program I WOULD'VE gone to michigan. ann arbor is a great college town and being a sports fanatic, michigan has one of the best athletic departments in the nation.

ok thanks for the info

I'd go with Michigan

in my personal opinion, i don't think connections should be a reason to pick nyu over umich. umich is a reputable school and like what slipper said, ny companies recruit at umich too. also, sure nyu has great opportunies internship-wise, but you won't be interning during the school year. you'll be interning during the summer (someone pointed this out to me before). i agree with bigred that the 4-year program is the biggest deciding factor.

i've heard that nyu stern is really cutthroat, but i don't know much about that. if i were you (which i may be in months to come) i'd pick the school that's more laid back and less competitive.

anyway, thats just what i think.. i'm still in high school so i'm not the most experienced person.

one more thing that superchica mentioned, about stern being cutthroat. yea it's really competitive, but that's how it is in the business world after you graduate. might as well get used to it.

2 totally different schools
Stern is better than Ross by a good amount
Mich as a school is on a decline and has been declining for some time
NYu as a school is continually improving and has been improving for a while and will eventually be top in everything.

I would choose NYu without hesitation

^obviously...(nyusternman) the name doesnt give it away...
anyway is what nyusternman said about umich declining and nyu improving correct? can anyone verify this? cuz if this is true, then i would guess nyu would seem to be the better choice to attend in the long run

Please. Michigan is a university on the decline?! FYI Michigan's business school is ranked no. 1 by the Wall Street Journal and 6th by Business Week. You must be on the admissions committee at NYU. LOL!!

If nyusternman is going by US News rankings to determine whether or not a school is declining, the answer is they are both declining. Not that I agree with US News, I'm just stating what they say.

Usnews is garbage. I'm going by what committees think, professors, student body quality, and businessmen and lawyers. People I've spoken to from hedge funds to corporate law firms view NYU as an unofficial Ivy. Mich was once very good but is declining.
NYU ug blows away Michigan ug in terms of student body, Mich has like a 60% acceptance rate and NYUs average SAT is over 100 points higher, which is nothing to sneeze at. I was offered a full scholarship at Mich but turned it down for NYU. For example, compare the law schools: MIch used to be one of the top, now NYU is consistently one of the top while Mich is clearly a shell of its former self.

so is one school declining at a faster pace than the other?

strictly concerning education, internships, and anything else that could help you out in future situations such as finding a job (all college town and athletic department perferences aside) which is better?

NYU is on the ascent in pretty much everything. Think about it, would professors want to live in NYC-the center of the world, or Ann Arbor. NYU will only continue to get better. NYu is voted high school kids' dream school. It's endowment is continually getting larger and it is in NYC--expect the improvement to continue.

I have worked at a top consulting firm, go to a top 7 Business School as an MBA, and know the business world really well. I have NEVER ever heard of NYU on par with the Ivies, not even remotely close. People recognize Stern is a good school, but overall NYU isnt as respectable as Michigan.

Stern and Ross are relative equals, but in my opinion Michigan offers a much higher quality of life.

"I have worked at a top consulting firm, go to a top 7 Business School, and know the business world really well. I have NEVER ever heard of NYU on par with the Ivies. People recognize Stern is a good school, but overall NYU isnt close to as respectable as Michigan. People would laugh at that."

When I was in NYC, this couldn't be farther from the truth. You can say what you want, but it's clear NYU is rising while Michigan is declining.
