NYU >>> Wellesley Chances

I am a freshman at NYU and am thinking of transferring to Wellesley for next fall.

GPA at NYU - 3.79
Worked two jobs during the year totaling 15 hours/week (one med. office, one teaching kids how to read)
Was part of a hospital-volunteer type club as well as Russian club

Very competitive high school - 92.02 average
SAT - 2040

Haven't really asked for recs yet - how worried should I be about this aspect?
(I am worried!)

I don't know anything about transfer admissions and need all the advice I can get.

(Do high school ECs even matter?)

Since you are a freshman, what you've done in college will count a little less and HS a little more. Your essays will be very important, particularly why you want to transfer and why Wellesley is a good school for you.

I don't know when the Wellesley deadline is, but most transfer apps aren't due until March (and most are due in April). If you get all your info together and ask for recs in the next two weeks or so, it won't be a problem in the slightest.

Just wondering, why do you want to transfer out of NYU?

Thanks a lot for the advice.

My high school ECs -

3 varsity sports for 3 years, captain of one
president of Russian Club
hospital internship during one summer (life-changing experience)

There are several reasons I want to transfer out of NYU. A few have little to do with NYU and everything to do with my not being suited for NYU.

For example, I am in the nursing program and want to do pre-med. If I were to transfer to CAS, I am afraid of not getting recommendations due to the huge class size. In fact, many go to the London study abroad program just to get a recommendation.

Also, NYU just feels so disconnected. I can't explain the feeling, but classes are huge, my dorm is somewhat far from where everything is centered, and it's hard to have any kind of holistic college experience. It's difficult to keep in touch with people and it's difficult to feel part of something.

I am also not rich and everything is just so expensive. There is an extraordinary amount of things to do and I appreciate that fact, but it's truly limiting in terms of money.

Do colleges really expect deeply personal, amazing recommendations? I only had one small class and that prof knows me/my work/my potential well. The next smallest class was 40 people, and although I asked questions (during and after class), he just doesn't know me that well.

I hate great recs in hs, but they were from teachers I had all year, 5 days/week.

What does everyone think?

Also, are there any statistics/anecdotes about transferrng to Wellesley? Will it help that I went to NYU?

I had to take the classes I did for my nursing major, although I don't want to continue with the major.

Intro to chem - A
Writing the Essay - A-
Intro to psych - A-
Nutrition - A-

The transferring process is so intimidating. Ugh...

taken straight from the Transfer Admissions 101 thread

"What Matters Most?
No one can really say, but here is the common wisdom: College GPA and college recommendations matter most."

You have a competitive GPA at NYU which is a good school. You also have some good extracurriculars. Even if your recs arent perfect, craft your essays to the best they possibly can be. You cant control how your college recs go at this point but you can control how well your essays are written.
