Transfer to NYU

I'm applying to transfer to NYU - CAS
But my HS GPA is HORRIBLE (I'm lucky if I say I had a 2.7)
My current GPA freshman in Plattsburgh State is (3.56 first semester, 4.0 second semester, 3.7 overall)
My ACT score was high for Plattsburgh (my current college) but low for NYU - too low to say.
In HS I was president of almost 10 clubs, Senior Editor of 3 programs (newspaper, yearbook, etc.), class president, and vice president of 2 clubs
I have a killer recommendation from a college professor (i was told it means more than having one from an HS teacher)
And I have pretty good essays.
Do I have a chance at all?

bumparoo ^_^

hey I go to NYU right now and I'm actually thinking about transferring myself. Anyway, I'm not really sure how much they heavily weigh hs stats, but I've heard if you've only been in college a year it's a formidable consideration. NYU is big on GPA and test scores, and if you couldn't even mention your ACT... well, that's not good news. However, your GPA right now is pretty good although I'm not sure what level Plattsburgh State is on. I'd say you have an okay chance in CAS, but apply around if your heart is really set on leaving your current school.

You want to transfer FROM nyu? why? is not as great as i hope it is :(?

Hey haha no no no no I dont want to put down NYU at all, but... it's just not for everyone. I'm giving sticking around this semester to give it one last shot, but I really kinda want to have the typical "college experience" which NYU definitely does NOT provide. Living in the city and being independent is what you get in return, which is great.. I would definitely miss NYC for sure. But there's a saying that NYU kids come to NYU for the NY and not really the U... It's true that NYU is the "#1 Dream School" but I know a lot of kids who reevaluated that dream once they got here... it's not what you expect, but not necessarily in a bad way. But everyone's experience is different! I wasn't that involve with the actual college first semester and I'll try to change that this semester. You never know.... best of luck to you.

oh okay, I thought i was worried for a bit. thanks for your help

I'm applying to NYU Stern as a junior for fall 09 from Syracuse University:
-current GPA: 3.6 but I expect to bring to AT LEAST 3.7 (bombed 1 writing class in HS, which I plan to retake here in spring 09, but apparently they won't see that semesters GPA...)
-Various Extracurriculars: Investment Club, Entrepreneurship Club, Red Cross...
-The problem is I bombed my SAT's in HS, I got around a 1700 & I never took SAT II's bcuz I graduated HS early (I'm almost 2 years ahead for my age)
-I've heard they barely look at SAT's if you have above freshman status in college, but otherwise do I have a chance?

Dabillano, I completely agree. I'm at NYU trying to transfer out myself, for various reasons. OP, NYU does focus a lot on gpa/SAT/ACT but you're gpa is decent...apply, you never know!

I was looking to try and transfer to NYU for next fall. I am worried about the finances but am also worried that I won’t get in… Is it easier or harder to get in as a transfer student?

Its actually easier to get in as a transfer student, it depends what school your transferring to. Sometimes I wish I went to a different school then NYU, but I guess too late for me now.

NYU I remember reading the 08 forum and you were so excited to go. What changed?

hey nyu44, you mentioned it depends what school your transferring to… what school is the easiest for transfers? I’m going to loyola in baltimore now and nyu is my top choice. just looking for a city school and some input.
thanks!

I’m from nyc and go to a big state school in the midwest. I think I had a decent chance of into nyu in high school, i’m not sure, but it probably would have been a target/reach. I didn’t apply because i only took one sat 2 and thought i wanted to get away from the city but i really miss it. for those of you that are transferring i heard the same things about it not being enough of a campus school but after going to a campus school for a semester i think i might like that whole city vibe. i’m just wondering what the greek life at nyu is like? as a sophomore i’m a little worried about meeting people and think that maybe greek life would be a good way

greek life is almost non-existent at NYU. it’s a very small percentage of students. i’m always surprised when i see someone with greek letters. i know a few people in it and they LOVE it, but it’s not really a huge part of NYU at all. they don’t have separate houses for greek life, instead they have penthouse suites in one of the downtown dorms. it’s nice if you’re in it, i suppose.

do i have a chance of transferring from a california CC to steinhardt under childhood ed with a ~3.4?

ok so im a senior in highschool n i got in2 Stony Brook University…my GPA is a 3.9 n my Sat score is a 1640 n im VERy gud in the areaa of extracurriculam activities …but im thinkn of aiming higher i wanna transfer 2 NYU…do i have a chance?..
wht are the requirements?..do i have 2 retake the SATS?

Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone thinks I have a chance of being accepted into NYU.

In highschool I did fine, until my senior year. I was very ill that year and it affected my over school progess, and consequently my gpa. I graduated with an unweighted 3.49 gpa, and weighted 4.6 gpa.

My SAT’s were not that great. Reading: 640. Math: 440. Writing: 550.

I am a first generation student, and I was incredibly involved in highschool, including holding multiple leadership roles. I was also very multifaceted, involving myself in marching band, band, history-related, science-related activities, and I also volunteered at various locations outside of campus, such as hospitals and nursing homes.

Now in college I have 3.79 gpa; this is the gpa I received finishing my sophomore year. I am very involved in my community. I am in the Honors program at my current institution: Florida International University. I am in Golden Key International Honor Society, and another honor society on campus. I helped found 2 organizations for pre-med students, and have involved myself in various clubs that tutor and mentor both college students and stutdents grades k-12. This is scratching the surface of what I have done.

I am not really happy at the University I am currently attending, so I would really like to transfer. I have been told in the past that NYU is not very collaborative with financial aid. They do assist, but not substantially. I am not aware if they consider transfers need-blind or not. So if someone could mention something on that, I would appreciate it, since I have not yet come across any info regarding this. Thanks everyone, and take care.

Sorry everyone, my weighted gpa was 5.4 not what I had stated before. Hope to get help with this process. Thank you.

Im a student at Penn state with a gpa of 3.7 my first year, what are my chances of getting in to nyu, also my highschool gpa was terrible 2.8 , and my sat’s were in the 1600’s.

I plan on applying to Stern for Fall of 2012. I currently go to SUNY Geneseo and have a 3.97 GPA out of 4. I would be applying to transfer as a junior. I am on the tennis team, a member of Accounting society, honor society, and our schools leadership development program. I have two good teacher recommendations. I feel like I have a good chance but I would just like to know where I stand.
