Oberlin Conservatory

I am very interested in the music conservatory at Oberlin and if anyone has any information, especially about the vocal department, I'd love to hear it! :)

Hi! I'm a second year voice major at Oberlin. I will gladly answer any questions that you have!

I think Oberlin does a great job! If I had it to do over, I would apply there and see what happens.

Who are the voice teacher that everyone is dying to have? Are there any that specialize in baroque singing?

Thanks!

Who do you take lessons from Coloratura?

I take lessons from Lorraine Manz. It seems like the teachers people really want to study with are Manz, Mahy and Champagne. I know that Kendra Colton still does some performing in baroque singing so you could get in contact with her. Also, you have the opportunity to sing with the baroque ensemble as one of your ensemble electives.

thanks! sounds like a spectacular program. roughly, how many soprano's were admitted when you were a freshman?

We had an incoming class of about 24. Out of that I think we have about 15 sopranos, 2 mezzos, 2 bass-baritone and the rest tenors. My numbers could be a bit off but I did my best to remember. The incoming class this year had about 29 people and was the biggest class they have had in a while. I think the problem was that they over-accepted and then a lot of people decided to come because I heard a rumor last year that they were trying to make it more difficult to get accepted.

About how many transfer students do you think they took, out of those 24?

Last year I think we had 2 transfers and this year there were 4, I think.

As far as acceptances go, is the decision usually based mostly on the audition or do academic records hold just as much importance? My transcript is stellar, but my SATs are a lot less than perfect...

Thanks so much! You've been such a help! :)

A table of average SAT scores separated by college and conservatory is available at
http://oberlin.edu/instres/irhome/www/sche25/

As you can see, the average is respectable for the conservatory. Remember that is the average and there a lot of students admitted with scores lower than those. The admission decision will be mostly based on the audition, but they consider academics a little more than a stand-alone conservatory like Curtis, Juilliard or NEC would.

At an information session they said the audition is about 80% of the decision.

I've known a number of violin and viola students accepted at Oberlin Conservatory. Auditions were very good for all, grade and stat packages mixed. I know one of the violinists had an ACT of 21 (not a high score) with a GPA around 3.2.

I'm sure that Admissions will look at the whole "package" if the faculty likes the audition. You can always call and ask if they have a minimum accptable SAT below which they won't consider admission under any circumstances.
