Does anyone know about this option, is it better to audition early or regular? does it increase your chances? Could they potentially fill all the openings for a category (for instance flute, with only around 4 openings a year) before regular auditions?

Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Very, very few are accepted into the Conservatory early review. Most are either deferred or rejected. A big advantage of early review is that it allows you to get a December decision and still have time to apply to the college ED II. If you really want Oberlin Conservatory and you are exceptional, give it a try. Unless you are rejected outright, being deferred is the end of the world by any means.

Now a senior, my D works for Oberlin Conservatory Admissions office and, in fact, auditioned early action herself. If your student is ready, mentally and musically, early action is a great option. There is no prejudice against students auditioning early. I am glad to answer any questions you might have. I would much rather travel the first week of December than the middle of February, weather is less of an issue.

Well, very few are admitted to the conservatory regularly.
I think it might depend on the instrument (or voice). Since they haven’t heard the bulk of auditions, they’d be more hesitant with like woodwinds (since there’s only around 4 spots), so maybe they tend to get deferred more? Where as maybe violin they’re maybe not so concerned with someone better coming along and since they have more spots…?

I think I’ll see where I am mentally around september/october…just really nervous right now haha…

Thanks guys.

My son was accepted early review for composition. Oberlin was his first choice so early review was a good option for him. I had a typo in my answer above. Being deferred early review is not the end of the world. Sorry for the mistake.

coughdrops- POTO Mom is so right about audition travel, especially to place in snow belts! Besides, getting an audition or two out of the way earlier in the game lessens the overall stress and builds confidence.
I know you’re “nervous” but take a deep breath and get on with it. Frankly, you don’t have time to wait until October to see “where you are”- flute is one of the most competitive instruments so your audition rep should be chosen and almost fully polished in just a few weeks. I posted a reply in your other thread…
