Oberlin ED - 2021

I’d throw in “artsy” and “hipster” as 2 adjectives that many would use to describe the student body.

Also, just a word in general- Oberlin’s reputation as a school full of ridiculous, coddled white social justice warriors is huge in the news but from my time on campus this is nowhere NEAR the reality. I found people of various political stances and “levels” of political correctness, while (of course) leaning heavily left. It seems like news sources get word of a legitimate issue on campus and it gets stretched and demonized to look like people making a big fuss over nothing. Not sure why Oberlin is targeted so much for this, but other LACs have been subject as well such as Vassar with the whole “shredding the constitution” fiasco they had there.

I know my biggest worry going into my Oberlin visit was this reported aspect of the school’s culture, but was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and laid back everyone was.

Yes, my daughter was happy to know that Oberlin wasn’t as extreme as it seems to be portrayed in the media. She is definitely left learning but not what I would describe as extreme. She is artsy and somewhat hipster and could stay up all night talking about things like Studio Ghibli movies or writing a one act play. I think she just felt like there were a lot of kindred spirits for her at Oberlin. Right now she’s at a private school that tends to be more on the preppy/athlete side so it would be a welcome change of pace if she ends up an Obie!

@LMC9902 Sounds like your D and mine could be kindred spirits!

@LMC9902 maybe she and I could end up as pals next year. Hope so!

@walkbanx I will definitely put you in touch with her! It’s funny, she’s so not a social media girl and has no accounts (except a Deviant Art account) but I did tell her she may have to join Facebook or something if she gets in because it will be a good way to connect with people.

@Collegewhet I’m in the same boat! I’ve never visited the campus, but applied ED because my college counselor and alumni that I knew felt I was a good fit. Several of my teachers are alumni and describe the school as being supportive, and very progressive.
