Oberlin Parents

I am a new Oberlin parent; my son was accepted ED for Class of 2018. I have an older son who will be graduating from Yale in the spring. On the Yale CC boards, there is a running thread for Yale Parents, which has been incredibly helpful over the years, providing information and answering questions for parents by other parents. It has been especially useful at times when newbies are trying to navigate situations such as Parents Weekends, registration, rooming situations, etc. I searched for a similar board on the Oberlin discussion forum, but didn't see anything. Is there any interest from Obie parents for a similar board here? I'm excited for the next four years! I loved Oberlin when we visited and DS is thrilled to be going there.

Long time lurker here - I’d be interested! I even got myself an account. :D

Hi my2sunz- I am also a new Oberlin parent who has a son accepted ED to the College for next fall. I would be very interested in a running thread for us Obie parents! We are from Connecticut.

Great! That’s a start - looking forward to getting to know you. Would love for some experienced parents to join too and share their wisdom of all things Oberlin. :)

My daughter will graduate from Oberlin Conservatory in vocal performance this year. It has been a fantastic 4 years. I love Oberlin as much as she does and will really miss my visits there, the students and the teachers. I am glad to answer any questions new parents might have. Shurtleff Cottage is a wonderful place to stay, try the salads at Aladdin’s, do take the historical tour to learn about the Underground Railroad and Oberlin’s great history and walk through the art museum every time you visit - it’s marvelous. Don’t forget all the wonderful musical activities, there is world-class music there every day. For day trips, there is the great West Cleveland produce market and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you like antiquing, there are some very cool out of the way places that only the locals know about. PM me if you have any specific questions. Enjoy the journey. It goes very fast. PS: Move in day can be very hot. Rent a storage unit in the summers to store your stuff but reserve it early because they go fast. (5 students can share the cost)

Some schools, e.g. Middlebury, have a Facebook page for parents that is administered by someone from the college. It is a great source of information where parents can share tips. It would be nice if Oberlin could launch such a page.

My child is a freshman - so I have SOME insight on some things - but a lot is still new!

Nearby Bath Bath and Beyond is in Elyria. Five star French restaurant in Vermillon. Worth the trip, it’s on the lake. My daughter had a wonderful 4 years at Oberlin, received a world-class education, made many great friends, some with faculty. I also second many of POTO Mom’s comments.

I was involved in one before my daughter went to grad school. It is on another social site though. It was very active at one point but don’t know now.

My D is also a graduating senior and has loved Oberlin. She had a fabulous education and we have loved the various trips we have made there, although we are glad to have graduated before Cleveland got dropped as a United hub. My only advice is to make your graduation reservations early.

qialah - good advice on graduation reservations. I learned that with my older son; he is graduating this May from Yale and I made hotel reservations last June! On a similar note: I already made hotel reservations for both orientation and parents weekend. A friend suggested staying in North Olmstead, as it is near tons of shopping to pick up all of those things that you either forgot to pack or didn’t want to cart along.

POTOmom - I’d love to get some more details on the antiques places that you mentioned. And thank you for the other recommendations. This is exactly the kind of info that I was hoping for!

I will have to ask my sister (an antiques dealer herself) what the name of the antiques store was. She bought some items there. The proprietor of Shurtleff Cottage called ahead for us and the lady opened her shop. It is a couple of miles from Oberlin. I will PM you.

Great…thank you, POTO Mom!

My D is waiting on regular decision for Theatre and Dance. Does anyone know how they notify accepted or rejected students?

My D is class of 2017. They notify by regular mail the last week of March. They didn’t specify a date last year and she found out the Monday after the IVY’s released their notifications. It was a long wait.

My daughter is a double degree student, class of 2016. Oberlin has exceeded her (very high) expectations. I’m happy to give recommendations on travel, hotels, etc. We fly out of La Guardia (or drive across Pennsylvania). In addition to Shurtleff Cottage, we highly recommend the Hallauer House. For an upcoming visit, all the local places were booked so we are staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Vermilion, OH (about 20 minutes away). The town looks quite nice. The Oberlin Inn will be undergoing a badly needed renovation soon, so we will have to be flexible in finding accommodations.

April Campus Visit Days for Class of 2018: Son just sent an email to admissions, as it said that registration would open mid-March and he hasn’t gotten anything. Has anyone gotten info on this? Did he just miss the email? :)

@ my2sunz. You can check out the All Roads Lead to Oberlin page and get the up to date info on this. It looks like registration is not yet open.

Greetings all! I love the idea of this. For the April campus visits, is it common for parents to attend or is it mainly for students? My son got an email today (or maybe yesterday) for All Roads Lead to Oberlin.
