I know there are many posts about visa already but I can't find one telling the exact steps to obtain a visa. I got the I-20 from my school. I'm thinking about filling in some forms: DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158. Is that all?
Besides, I have trouble with the Sevis fee. Can you tell me more about it? I am quite confused since I find some people say that you yourself pay the fee while others say the school pay. In the end, what is it and how can I pay for it?

Actually, about the first questions, I don't know exactly. I am confused as same with you.
With the SEVIS fee, you'll have to pay the SEVIS fee yourself if your school doesn't do it for you. If they have already done it, they will send you a receipt of SEVIS fee. That's in my case, my school paid the fee and sent me the receipt along with I-20.

Do we need to have Toelf score in order to get a visa? My school waived me the toefl part so i didn't take it. Now I'm kinda worried since it is said on the embassy website that :"All applicants should be prepared to provide scores from standardized tests required by the educational institution such as the TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.;" I only have my SSAT score, which is not very good though (I got only 71% overall, 85% for reading and 27% for verbal....urgh). I am wondering if i should take the toefl test since I won't be able to have a visa appointment until late June.
Have you known anyone obtained a visa without toefl score?

I have a question about visa. I'm not US citizen but I have the green card (permanent resident card) and I lived in US for nine years. Do I need a visa for attend BS? I just got an e-mail, they asked about the details for I-20. Kind of confused.

ntmngoc
at the US embassy you just have to "prove" your english is good enough. You have been accepted and you have the I-20! One of my sons didn't pass the TOEFL but the I-20 was enough to get his visa.

mehappykid, you definitely do NOT need a visa if you have a green card. You're already a U.S. permanent resident. The school probably assumes that you need a visa b/c you live abroad (I'm guessing). Just let the school know that you have a green card.

for the first two posters:
First you fill in the form i910 (i think thats the one...) and pay the sevis fee of 100USD. Next if you are from india, you pay visa fee from an hdfc bank and get 2 receipts. After 2 days, you fill in the 3 DS forms and attach your photo. You also get a receipt by post and an e receipt for the SEVIS stuff.

I you appllyin at Mumbai consulate, you need to submit your DS forms, SEVIS receipt and photo copies of your passport at a VFS office 5 days prior to your VISA interview.

on the day of your interview you need to take the remaining appropriate docs along with the appointment letter.

About the Toefl part: If your SAT Verbal score is low, it is strongly encouraged that you give the toefl. There are loads and loads of people who are rejected a visa because of bad english scores. If youve got great grades at school for competitive english, it can replace your toefl but you must carry the report card with you.

However, remember that visa interviews have more to do with yourfinancial capabilities more than your edu stats....

Ive got a visa interview scheduled for tomo.....so I know all the stuff above....

@adso: u've got to tell me about it. How was it? Did they ask your toefl score?

ntmngoc, i guess from your username, you're vietnamese??? If you're in Vietnam, the Sevis fee must be paid at City bank 17th Ngo Quyen Hanoi. and for the interview , Vuon Hong 170 Ngoc Khanh. It wont take place at the US embassy on Langha Street. Be sure to be able to proof that you have no intention in staying in the US after your study. That's the most important thing.

toefl score is a must. either toefl or ielts would be fine

Here's the thing. My sister filled out and summitted the Ds-156 form for me this afternoon - kind huh? However, she got like 1/2 answers of the form wrong.
So...I don't know what i have to do now. Should I filled out a new form? Or should I contact the embassy and ask them if I can have it fixed? I heard sb said that u should not fill a new form.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@van_do: have u got your visa yet? I decided not to take it since it takes me lots of time (and costly). My friends in the U.S say students receiving scholarship always get a visa(like 100%).
