My husband wants to go and visit our D during the October study break (10/16-19). My daughter is concerned that the football game won't be as exciting because most students leave for the break. Is this true? The game is not against a popular team, but with the way they are playing, it should still be exciting to watch.
Thoughts?

Michigan Football is fun because of spirit, not by number in attendance or how they are playing. I’m sure the football stadium will decently filled regardless.

That said, I would go.

I don’t think most students leave for the study break. Football is always fun regardless.

My only thoughts are how on earth she feels relaxed enough to have visitors during the study break. Those are the last couple days before finals.

October 16 is the homecoming game against Iowa. That’s strange that the study break would coincide with homecoming because there are a lot of campus activities that week and it would be strange to have the campus empty out of students during these activities. Iowa will be a strong opponent and the homecoming game is usually good with the alumni band members and cheerleaders. I would definitely go to the game.

“The game is not against a popular team, but with the way they are playing, it should still be exciting to watch.”

Are you kidding? Since Hayden Fry became coach at Iowa back in the 1980s, Michigan vs Iowa has been a significant rivalry. Iowa is currently ranked in the top 10 in the nation. If they can win at #24 Arizona next week, Iowa will be, at the very least, 4-1 and ranked in the top 15 when they come calling on October 16. By the way, the Michigan Iowa game will be televised on ABC.

I would definitely go to that game.

Thanks all of you football fans! My daughter’s original concern was the student section would not be as full as usual, and therefore, not showing her dad the “real deal”.

Student section was fairly packed during fall break last year and it was against Delaware St., a scrub team. I imagine Iowa should be fine.

The student section looked on the thin side against Delaware St. If the game is during the fall break, there will be students missing but enough will go to give dad the “real deal”. It is not like basketball during spring break when the band doesn’t show up.

Iowa is a huge home game this year. Iowa is one of the top 2-3 teams in the Big Ten this year, you can’t really compare that to Delaware St.

I think there are several differences between last year’s Delaware State game and this year’s Iowa game.

1) Delaware State is no Iowa. Delaware is a relatively weak program with no realy rivalry against Michigan. On the other hand, not only is Iowa a respectable program, but Michigan has pretty significant rivalry against the Hawkeyes…one that dates back to the 1980s. I remember the scare they gave us back in 1997, the year Michigan won its last national championship. This year, Iowa is a legitimate top 20 team and will be ranked as such come October 16. If they can find ways of beating ASU and Penn State, they could be ranked in the top 5!

2) Michigan is having a good year and Wolverines are getting behind this team. Even though we were off to a 4-0 start last year, we had lost two straight games going into the Delware State game and were unranked. This year, barring a major injury or brain fart, we should be 5-1 and ranked in the top 25 going into the Iowa game. We could even be 6-0 and ranked in the top 10.

For these reasons, I am fairly certain that the October 16 game vs Iowa is going to be big!

if you decide not to go give me your tickets!!
