What was the other topic for the essay? I had the humor/difficult situation one.

I have no idea how well it will be taken. I wrote about how humor allows you to relax during difficult situations and to help refocus or something like that, lol.

My examples were Harry Potter (ron, lol), Shakespears 12th Night, and a example of how my dad always says "If you can laugh at a problem it is no longer a problem." I ended with a run-on sentence for my conclusion but I think I could have done worse and I used up every single line. I'm expecting an 8 or an 9.

What examples did you use? What score do you expect?

I absolutely hated the humor prompt, but I tried. Ended up saying that humor was not the best course of action, and used FDR, MLK, and I think John Proctor from the Crucible (though the reasoning on this was pretty bad but I kind of worked it in) because they used action to deal with a difficult situation (Great Depression, Civil Rights, the Puritan society).

I ended up writing 1 3/4ths of the page, but I write relatively small so I hope that’s good enough.

I wrote something about how humor is effective in bringing problems to light, with Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest and Jonathon Swift’s A Modest Proposal (which I forgot the name of).

I like my examples, but I don’t think I’ll get above a 10 because my writing style was very messy. I’m just hoping to beat the 8 I got last time.

damn u guys w/ good examples… i couldnt remember anything from books that might have helped me(i remembered holden might haveb been funny but couldnt remember the story at all)… and only had 2 body paragraphs and had like a 2 sentence conclusion= u give a 6?

I only used two examples, one of which was a personal one so I won’t go into that. But do you guys think this example works? I said Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls” is a humorous portrayal of the high school problems involving cliques and rapid assimilation (as in cady is pushed into a life of popularity too quickly; choosing to neglect family values) in that it tells the story of petty, vindictive teenage revenge.

I couldn’t think of any ‘literary’ or ‘historic’ examples that would be typical for other essays (like X Battle or Y Book’s plot, etc.) I just talked about how humor based on stereotyping etc can hurt in moving America away from its roots (melting plot, etc.) Gave some examples of comedians in the past (Mitch Hedberg) and now (Russel Peters) and contrasted them.
My second paragraph talked about the growing influence of political satire (Tina Fey ruining the GOP’s campaign with one SNL skit, etc.).

Would this be okay? I feel like my writing style (got an 11 last time around), etc are fine, just kinda nervous about writing an atypical essay.

Literary book: alice in wonderland
examples - Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat
Humor leads to confusion

Current event: Obama’s education speech
examples - youtube parodies, controversial news
Humor leads to confusion / makes matters worse / makes things that aren’t bad “bad.”

would michael moore’s satire of healthcare work…to show humor is not the best way to solve problems…no solutions given…just laughing at the situation

@ Blackroses216: What was your topic?
I got humor. Examples:
History: Kankan Musa, King of Mali in 12th century.
Being serious evoked respect from the citizens.
Personal anecdote: Humor use in serious situations may evoke little or no respect.
Literature: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Had Darcy not used humor, he and Elizabeth would have been together earlier. (Couldn’t think of anything else!)
I’m hoping for a 11/12. I got a 9 last time, but that was 1 1/2 pages. This was 2 pages.

i got the “does everyone need a family?” question.

I used Ebenezer Scrooge, old cat ladies, and Bruce Willis from Cast Away as my examples… basically saying that people will find their “families,” whether human or otherwise.

edit: the question was like, “does everyone need a family, even if they choose to separate themselves from society… etc”

I used Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” and tied that into how the lack of support her husband gave her had negative consequences.

I had the humor prompt. I used the Revolutionary War (comics satirize British and unify the colonists), Huckleberry Finn (Twain uses satire to approach and point out flaws in society/human behavior), and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Hoping for a 11/12. My guess is 10 though.

Wow you guys pick really good examples for your essays. I was just like “Humor sucks. Be serious. If there’s a fire, you better not be humorous about it.” and I pretty much elaborated on that for all of the two pages. xD
