OCTOBER 2010 Chemistry

There are 128 replies in the Math 2 thread lol. I think we can start discussing.

BTW the answer was isomer. Can anyone answer my questions?

ok thanks

yes potassium permangenate is purple
the 4 unpaired was the transition metal, which ever had 3d^6 at the end
dont remember the H3O+ question that clearly srry

What other choices were there for the most common ion in H3SO4 + H2O problem?

Oh does anyone know which substance produces a gas when added to acetic acid?

I said H3O+ was the most common ion, and I said that sodium carbonate thingy for the gas haha, I kinda assumed that maybe it’d give off CO2?

and I put d6 for 4 unpaird electrons and i used isomer and isotopes in my answer

For the first one, it was what is in coal and is reason for acid rain, I said sulfur?

then the +3 or +5 i said P and for a basic oxide I put Ca

How about y’all?

I think I got the H3O+ one wrong…as well as the gas one.
But for the other answers I put the same thing as 45fly

For the T/F one about the Oxygen reacting with Magnesium… was that TT CE or just TT?

@45fly
i put same for all of those

I put Hydrogen for the basic solution thing because it makes OH-

no i dont think it was hydrogen. almost all the metal oxides (except aluminium oxide and zinc oxide) are basic oxides

i think i got same for the most of them!

what did you guys put for the question that asked
what determines the characteristic of an atom?
i said mass number?

How many wrong can we get for an 800?

and also!
number 102
which is
Most solutes dissolve BECAUSE the interaction between ions…
(excuse my short-term memory, i can’t remeber the question!)
I think i said TTCE?

i believe electron structure determines characteristic

@ilikebananas

it depends, but probably 4wrong?

@ joon
is that 4 blank or 4 wrong with the penalty ?

@LemonTeaRex
WHAT!!?
NO WAY Man!
[Answers.com - What determines the chemical bonding characteristic’s of an atom](<a href="http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_determines_the_chemical_bonding_characteristic’s_of_an_atom]Answers.com">http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_determines_the_chemical_bonding_characteristic’s_of_an_atom)

i’m not sure if this is relevant.
but ?!?
i first thought it would be valence electrons
but it wasn’t one of the choices
so i went with mass number (proton number)

Same, I said electronic structure … weird wording!

@bananas
oh i meant 4 wrong with the penalities!
But It really varies all the time!
Most of the prep books say the raw score of 77~85 is 800

@joon: that may be. I was thinking general trends in characteristics. I think I may have just been played by the SAT’s tricky wording…
