October 2011 SAT Writing

I’m really sure that “had” is correct… Even in this context

Although New Zealand had fostered music for decades, it was not until the 1980’s when New Zealand musicians began to reach foreign audiences

Yeah, I’m pretty sure had is correct…we need silverturtle!

Any, would you explain your reasoning please? I agree, but no one is explaining why exactly or agreeing with another’s explanation.

If the sentence means that new Zealand started fostering music before 1980… Then I’m almost 100% sure that has is correct…actually, I found almost no way to make “has” make sense

I’ve already explained. The sentence is in the present perfect. So “had” is incorrect in tense and “has” is correct. Read posts.

What do you mean the sentence is in present tense ? "began " is past tense

colllaborate means to work together. So i thought that was wrong. I think the word they were looking for was elaborate.

@cortana I’m talking about supporting had. I saw your post and do not believe you are correct.

@any Yeah, exactly. I think you’re right.

You want a support for had:) you can easily find tons on example on google by searching past perfect tense… When you have an independent clause that is in past tense, the dependent clause must be in past tense if it is describing event before the independent clause…

having lay is wrong because lay is the present tense. you need the tense that needs a helping verb, which is having laid.

^ lol we already resolved that ***.

lay can be both simple present and simple past, but have different meaning.
Anyway, it is not participle…which is used in this case

If you still don’t believe that had is correct. Ask your teacher and see what he or she says

lol icic. hahaha. how did u guys all do? I feel a bit more relieved looking at all this. I hope I get a better score than before… but idk if I can get better than 700… but I felt so effed over on the olympics one… -.-;;

But thank goodness for one of those non-random generic topics. I hated the photograph question back in march…

about the collaborate question - i can def see how collaborate is wrong (i put that and then erased it, fffff) but why is “do that” correct?

what would be 0 wrong and 9 essay

I agree with @any, because 1980’s is in the past and “began” is also past tense. So it must be “had” instead of “has”. “Has” means something was in the past and is still going on. And “had” is just in the past.

And to all those people confused with “lay” and “laid”.
“Lay” is the past tense of “lie” (to lie down or to recline)
“Laid” is the past tense of “lay” (to put or to place)
I get confused too, but you just need to understand what the sentence means!

does anyone know which section was experimental? section 4 or 5? i remember the passage about the Olympics but dont remember the other one…

^Planets and extraterrestrials
