October 2014 ACT discussion thread

@gs2498‌ You cannot achieve high score on SAT/ACT essay if you write it like school essay. You need to have a clear 5-paragraph format with intro, 3-body with supporting details, and conclusion. I got a 11 on ACT writing in September after following just that.

Took the test cold, and I’m so happy I’ll never have to devote any more of my life to it.

Composite: 36

English: 36
Math: 35
Reading: 35
Science: 36

Writing: 10
Combined E/W: 34

Not really happy with my writing score, but I feel like graders are very hesitant to give a 6/6, so I guess it’s understandable.

However, I don’t really understand the combined English/Writing score. Does the composite include the E/W or just the English? Will this negatively affect how colleges see my scores?

Any status changed?

Still registered…

@jamesjunkers‌ On twitter ACT said the status will change only when our scores get released

@viphan‌ @gs2498 Not trying to beat you up, but that just is not true at all. I have gotten 12’s on both of my ACT’s and I do not follow that form. If anyone would like the general structure I use, I can post it in some thread, but the idea that you must follow some archetype is antithetical to what I’ve found. Intro and conclusion, yes. But, if you use topic sentences and conclusions, and a personal connection, it doesn’t matter what else you do syntactically. You have to write well and be fluent to have two scorers give you a six.

you guys think a lot will be posted tonight?

@alwaystesting‌ When they say they don’t release them by location they mean they don’t release by region or something, like AP tests sometimes are, not that they aren’t generally released by batches of test centers.

Actually hoping that a lot of scores will be posted tonight

Has anyone here experienced a delay before? Did the scores get released at 12 as usual?

I’ve always gotten them the first day, except this time. But wouldn’t it make sense that they would be put on at 8:00 A.M. central, like the first day release, than put them on at 12 tonight?

a lot of them got it at 12 CST in the first batch vs. 8am next day

Oh… Well regardless I’m not staying up until one to find out.

California gets them in 10 minutes right?

@wilguen - No, it’s on CST, so at least an hour if they’re released midnight.

If they do indeed come out at 12 CST, you will not get them for another hour.

@YOLOOLOY‌ It should come in today

anyone else waiting till 1 EST

anyone get their scores?

Still “registered”. (Sigh). Trying not to be too disappointed. Any status changes from anyone else?
