October 2014 ACT discussion thread

My status is still registered but the option to view/print ticket is gone now. Does anybody know what that means?

@mberry24 Same here!!! And same with all my friends who wrote at my centre. I’m just hoping it means that we are in the next set.

@jamesjunkers Theres no way cuz i only got -1, maybe -2 at most and i got a 35. I think u underestimated urself

Or maybe i overestimated myself haha… i hope not that would suck if there was a generous curve and i messed up

Also still registered but no option to print ticket any longer. baby steps…

I’m 90% sure I got 2 wrong, and I got a 36…

I took the ACT on a whim for the first time October (My mom threw a fit the last day of ACT late registration saying my SAT score wasn’t high enough) and for preparation I did 1 red book practice test the night before the actual test, came out with a 34. I left a ton blank on the test though because of time  Def easier then the SAT in terms of content, but it was a time crunch I wasn’t used to (or maybe just because I didn’t take many practice tests). The scoring was also a lot looser than the red book test I did just assuming from the amount I know I missed.

PM me. I’ve gotten a 12 both times I’ve taken the ACT

I am not yet get my scores…
anybody took it in hk?

I got 12 twice on the writing as well. I’ve often read that writing a lot helps. I think that seems like a stupid strategy but I’m usually prolific and that works well. Write a solid intro, presenting the prompt, and a conclusion wrapping your essay up, and what I usually do is write 2 paragraphs. I usually write about the opposing view in the first one and nuance it or debunk it in the second. So I balance it out and usually my second paragraph is my opinion. I finish by giving a clear answer in my conclusion. Conceding then affirming ( with illustrated examples ) has worked well for me. I think there is no right way to approach the essay. Frankly I don’t even understand why I got 12, maybe it’s because I wrote well ( also vocab) and introduced interesting thoughts.

Can someone who scored very well(33+) tell me how they prepared for each individual section?

when will the writing scores be up

@ArmandoB‌
I got a 33 composite (33E, 35M, 30R, 33S)

Any specific section you need a lot of help on?
Have you taken the ACT before? What were your scores?

English:
The questions on this section are very repetitive between tests, so take a lot of practice tests and try to understand why each question is wrong.

Math:
timing is key
Finish the first twenty by 12 minutes
Finish questions 21-40 by 30 minutes
Finish the rest by 60 minutes, obviously
Again, do a lot of practice tests

Reading:
didn’t do as well as other sections but…
You need to understand that the reading section requires no deep inferences, all answers can be found directly in the text. Try to really focus while reading and finish in 4 minutes, no longer. Answer line reference questions first

Science:
Skim the passage enough to understand what the experiment is testing. Not much else than take a bunch of practice tests

Pm me if you want more advice

Thanks Austin I’ll try that. BTW, I’m trying to improve all 4 section scores, so hopefully your advice helps.

Did you use any prep books? I have the red book and Barron’s ACT 36.

I got a 32:

34R
34E
28M
31S

I didn’t study at all for it (This is not a brag, that’s actually really crappy of me and is a character flaw) and that really hurt. It didn’t know much about the ACT before going into it, I was just using it a replacement for SAT2s. Reading and Eng weren’t bad, they were the same as the SATs and pretty much every standardized test I’ve taken since primary school. Math I was TOTALLY SCREWED because I had no freaking idea there was going to be trig and heavy geometry on the test. I thought it was going to be mainly Alg. 1/ logic stuff like the SATs. I got a 13 on geo and a 17 on Elem. Algebra.

Science I honestly thought I bombed because I was rushing through so fast. I went through and actually read all the info and stuff for the first few experiments, which wasted time. The whole test moved a lot faster than the SATs. I’m proud of my score though, and I’m fairly sure I can get a 34 if I retake it.

Who is currently waiting for the MC scores to be posted tomorrow?
Who’s part of the unlucky 20%…

I am! High five.

Still waiting. Still registered.

what time are they usually posted by? i forgot. and there are too many pages to look through
