October 25, 2008 ACT Discussion- English

what was the purpose of the sentence that said they planted corn in a circle?

what did you guys put for that stalin one?

that he used medieval techniques or he met with so and so to divide such and such?

there was a question about something.

blah blah he though, blah blah.

i choose ", he thought," not sure if i;m right thou, anyone else

theman66, I almost loled when I got to the Three Sisters passage. Too bad it wasn't the same haha.

I noticed the three sisters thing too. If it's plural..then shouldn't be sources or something?

I put ",he thought,"

what information would be lost if they took out that "Corn was planted in a circle" ??????

Im almost sure that the native americans was who/who.

And I thought the three sisters passage looked familiar! Woah.. that book is pretty accurate.

what did you guys put for that stalin one?

that he used medieval techniques or he met with so and so to divide such and such?

For the corn one I put that it was needed because it explained the first step in the process.

For stalin I think I kept it as it was. That he was medieval. Either that or i omitted it entirely but I can't remember if that was a choice on this question.

what did you guys put for that stalin one?

that he used medieval techniques or he met with so and so to divide such and such?

used medieval techniques for sure.......they even talked about castles and stuff in the next paragraph

damn I couldn't decide
well top score is 35 now

i couldn't find the three sisters passage in the real act guide...where is it?

^ maybe the last practice test?

for the corn planting one I put it gave unnecessary info about plating corn...because it WAS unnecessary...planting is not even close to the point

it was the 1st step in the process though

Ok...apparently vs. on the other hand.

The question asked for the word that would best show that historians knew little about the writer. The preceeding sentences stated that not much was known about her life, but it was believed by scholars that she wrote fiction before joining the court. The next sentence has a blank for a transition word to be place; something like the following: _______________, she wrote her most famous work while a member of the court. The phrase "on the other hand" serves to contradict the previous statement and convey uncertainty about the life and writings of the author. "Apparently" would be a poor word choice and doesnt make sense here.

You people made the mistake at only examining the sentence in question. It often helps to examine the context as well. I am sure "on the other hand" is correct. Trust me, this is my 2nd time taking the ACT and I already got a 36 on English the 1st time! Good Luck!

Schoolsearching, I'm still confused as to why you think there should be a contrasting transition between "she wrote fiction" and "her most famous work."

does anyone remember explicitly what that part was? the apparently vs. on the other hand thing
