October ACT, EA Harvard

As long as we indicate on the common app that we are planning on taking the October ACT, Harvard will know not to read our application until those scores are sent to them? I filled in the rest of the information with my past ACT scores.

An application is considered INCOMPLETE until ALL required elements of your file, including test scores, have been received. That said, if one set of ACT scores have been submitted to the college, even though you have indicated that October scores are on the way, an Admissions Officers is free to read your transcript, course rigor, GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, teacher recommendations, guidance counselor’s Secondary School report (SSR) and interview report (if received) before those October ACT scores are received. If they do so, they will make notes and a preliminary assessment will be made on your file, and Admissions will revise your file again after the October scores have come in.

You should be aware that ACT has had massive problems getting the September writing scores out. Many kids are still without their scores and are in danger of missing the Nov1st deadlines. ACT has advised them to send in screenshots of their scores and send them in without writing but many schools are refusing to take screenshots. No one knows what will happen with Oct test scores.

Some top schools have warned that Oct. ACT test scores may not be received in time I believe.

I am aware of the recent situations. Although based on past experiences, including the September one, my school has been on time. Hopefully that continues! Thanks for the help guys.

^^ Your school being on-time is not the issue. The ACT changed the writing component of the test, and is now having trouble training teachers to grade the new test. The September ACT writing scores will not be made available – nationally – until November 1st. As I understand it, the issue is a national one, not a situation where one school is on-time and others are not. I can only imagine the October ACT will not be available until December 1: https://college.harvard.edu/admissions

@gibby so even though I can see my writing scores for the September ACT, they weren’t sent or made available to colleges? Would you mind explaining this further "The September ACT writing scores will not be made available – nationally – until November 1st. As I understand it, the issue is a national one, "?

You are fine for your Sept scores if you have gotten the results already.

According to their website, ACT is trying to get all the Sept. scores done by Nov. 6th so some kids will miss some of the early deadlines for other schools who require the scores by Nov. 1. They SAY that for the Oct. test the scores should be available Nov.10 -Dec 28th so just be aware that for some kids, the scores will not be available until after SCEA decisions have already been released. Hope this is not the case with you.
