OCU Connections

I have a question for parents and students at OCU. What theater opportunities are there in Oklahoma outside of school. In terms of regional theaters, outside classes, etc. Are there any valuable connections to be made in Oklahoma as opposed to like New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc.
Also, what is there to do in Oklahoma? I know that oklahoma city is an actual city, but outside of the city, is it very rural and you know… rural?

Actually there are several citys nearby, Tulsa, which has a great arts community. You are close to Dalla/Ft Worth and not too far from Kansas City which has a huge classical arts community. In the OCU area there are several regional theaters, I know some of the students perform there alot.
Also OCU has some really wonderful connections in New York and with some important people in the indusrty.

rural is in the eyes of the beholder :)

haha. WMonMTDad, you are so right. I laughed at claydavisdbc's post, but didn't know how to answer it. My idea of rural, living in Texas all my life, and someone else's idea of rural are probably not the same.

I suppose areas outside of any city can be considered "rural." Oklahoma has Indians who own casinos, and there is a horse track in Oklahoma City but I have never been there. They have a Triple-A baseball team, and several regional theaters, as srw said. There seem to be a lot of colleges there as well (OU, UCO, et al, are very near) so compared to my neck of the woods, it's not rural at all.

I've done a show at The Pollard, which is a professional residential theatre in Guthrie, about 30 mins away. (And they pay a stipend.)

There is also City Rep and Lyric, as far as pro theatres in OKC go, and there are at least a few community theatres. And I know there's some stuff in Norman, as well.

There is also plenty to do in the city, if you find you have time, like museums, shopping, ice skating, bowling, laser tag, etc.

Just got back from a lightning trip to OKC. Saw the Kelli O'Hara concert at the Civic center last night with the Canterbury Chorale and some of the kids from OCU. S was one of those students and had a blast. In addition to being part of the big chorus he was one of the "Jets" in the "Tonight" scene form West Side Story. He loved meeting Kelli; said she was just so "normal" and down to earth.

All that to say...there is plenty to do in OKC...yesterday afternoon we went down to the river and watched part of the regatta competition. It was huge with schools represented from all parts of the country. I believe some one had told me last year that OKC actually hosts some of the Olympic rowing trials.

S loves it there
