ok. i know Columbia university would like their applicants to take rigorous courses and deff. AP COURSEs.

im in 3 honors .. math science and history .. english .. i decided not to do b/c i would like to have one easy class because i have a 2.5hr commute to and from my school everyday. I wake up a 400 in the morning and get home around 7. because i live in the bronx and the schools near me are failing.

ok.. i got to a private catholic college prep high school. all girls by the way lmao. anywhose my school only offers 5 AP courses.

im a rising junior btw

i know senior year im taking AP bio, and possibly ap spanish and english. but i want to avoid ap cal and us history lol. do you think taking 3 AP courses will hurt my chances ?

if your school only offers 5 u cant do anything about it however it would clearly be better if you took all 5 rather than just taking two....cause that would def be considered the toughest possible curriculum at ur school....also taking them isnt enough, you also must do well in them.

Well you get to take more A.P's than me. My school doesn't offer any. Take all 5. It will look the best. They want to see you challenge yourself. How do you get to school, bus, car? if its one of those you can work while traveling..if its the subway..well studying is possible on there.
Take all 5 and just come up with a time management plan.

2 and a half hours? Even commuting by subway to Stuyvesant wouldn't take half that long. Where the heck do you go to school? There's no way anything in manhattan is even an hour and a half away.

maybe she cant do all 5 if some are in languages she has never taken, or in classes she could care less about, or is she doesnt have the prerequisits. i also have a question about rigor.

my school offers 20+ APs. I am taking 7 ap classes and would have taken exams for 6. my school allows 1 AP for sophomores and none for freshmen (but you can take an AP if you ***** enough). for my junior and senior years i only had 11 periods to take classes so would not filling them with APs hurt me this application season? out of 11 periods i took 6 AP classes (one double period) and all of them were hardcore classes that i was interested in, like BC and Physics instead of easier ones like environmental. also, would not taking ap english and ap in my foreign language kill my chances at schools?

OP said that the two APs they were trying to avoid were history and calc

My school offers none. But, we do have the full IB program.

Does yours offer IB classes?
[/quote]

most schools in the US do not offer IB except for some international schools and very few public schools usually because it is too expensive and you need competent teachers to have students who are successful on the IB exams.

i take the bus to school .. ITS ONE OF THE SLOWEST BUSSES IN THE BRONX .. the bx 42 . basically i take it from the first stop all the way to the last. Usually i wuld have went by car which takes about an 1hr .. due to excessive amount of traffic. but my mom was in a car accident and we cant afford to buy another car. so therefore im arriving home late b/c i still want to be involved. unfortunately i cant be involved as much as i would like.

umm AP US HISTORY WAS ONLY OFFERED TO STUDENTS WHO WERE IN HONORS DURING SOPHOMORE YEAR
AP ENGLISH is offered only to sstudents who were in english for all 3 years.
and AP CAL .. im in honors now though .. is a possiblity, but i have to do well on one of the states most challenging regents exam MATH B .

sooo that basically leaves me with .. AP BIO and AP SPANISH <- not my native language even though im in the spanish honor socitey..

im going to try for ap cal hopefully .. i dont know.

My son was admitted to Columbia and his high school only offered one AP course (Calculus AB). He took it of course.

Not that this helps you any because, of course, he did take the hardest course of studies available.

Columbia does have a section on their application where you can write in "extra" information. My son had a medical condition his freshman year which resulted in some B's. He had straight A's after that. We disclosed this in the "extra info" section. Perhaps you could disclose your long commute in this extra info section and how it impacted the classes you could take. How could they not be impressed by your committment to quality education by chosing such a long commute? momoffive

My son took 6 of the 8 APs offered at our school. But he only took three tests, and he did not report the scores to CU until after he was accepted (5,5,2--aargh). He also had uneven SAT 2 scores.

In his favor, he had a high SAT 1. And also, an essay and recs which I think put him over the top.

That bus route absolutely blows. I see now why there's no way to take the subway. I guess the closest thing would be to take the 6 line to 125th, change back uptown for the 4 line, and take that up to 176th or so. that would cut 75% of the route out, but you'd still have to get back on the bus. ouch.

that is definitely the worst commute i've ever heard of. i'd do all my homework on the bus, out of sheer boredom.
